Question about collecting seeds
Comments (2)You can post this on the Seed Saving forum (linked at the top of this forum's front page). There are also several FAQ's there on how to collect and save various types of seeds, storage tips, how hybrids differ from open pollinated varieties, and much more. You might also post over on the Perennials forum about the specific varieties for specific details. I know Red Sea is a relatively new hybrid sold as an F1 so it likely won't breed true but I don't know about the purple one. But if a Goggle of the variety names doesn't tell you if it is a hybrid or an OP or if it is a stabilized hybrid, the folks on the perennials forum will likely know. Hope this helps. Comments (2)Suspect that Oceana Blue is a trade name for Salvia patens. But, yes, seeds should come true, sow some now, away from intense heat, give them some shade, and you may have flowering plants in 3 months. Good luck!...See MoreCollecting Seeds of Salvia darcyi
Comments (4)Thanks, Robin! I think I finally found one today that had not dropped its seed yet. I discovered by reading the FAQ on the seed saving guide that if you look down into the calyx you can see the seed sitting there, and you can tell if it's ripe yet or not. I found a tannish colored calyx and opened it up and several seed spilled out - ripe, they were a dark brown to black color. Problem is, I wasn't prepared for the number of seeds the capsule contained, and it all spilled on the ground. There must have been 8-10 seeds in it! I thought there would be fewer than that because from what I read there should only be up to 4 seeds, one in each chamber????? I've got to get some paper bags so I can collect the calyces and store them until they've dried out. The seeds are tiny in comparison to the size of the blooms on darcyi. Comments (3)Not likely. The gelatinous coat washes off after a few days, and the mold spores will disperse with it, infecting other seeds in the germinating media. GA3 (giberrelic acid) hastens germination in xeric sages. Some respond to smoke water treatment as well. California and South African sages are good examples. Some of the sages from colder areas like central Asia and China may respond to stratification (alternation between just below to just above freezing). Subtropical sages usually germinate within 5 - 14 days at 75 - 80 degrees F. Seeds will stay in their calyxes 1 - 3 days after ripening. If you can't find any black, shiny seeds (maximum of four) inside the calyxes, watch out for birds and/or ants....See Morefirst_time_gardener
