Pepper Seeds

Two years ago I grew some Bell Peppers can't remember the type but may have been California wonder or something like that.Anyway,I rinsed the seeds off and wrapped them in a paper towel and forgot about them.Well today I found them in a box of other seeds inside a cabinet.Cool and dark.Does anyone think these seeds will germinate.I know it is a little late this year but thought I would give em a shot,or am I just wasting my time?Any advice or thoughts would be appreciated.

I've found that the rate of germination on peppers decreases greatly each year they are stored. But you might get a few to germinate.

Hi Rdunn,
You should still be able to get decent germination since you have kept them in a good spot. When you saved the seeds though, was you pepper completely ripe red? If you saved seeds from a green pepper, that will affect the germination greatly and you may not see much germination.

Pepper Seeds from Commercial Dried Peppers

"Are commercial dried peppers irradiated or dried at a high enough temperature to kill the seeds?" Yes in most cases. The massive commercial drying ovens are run at much higher temps than home food dehydrators as they can better control the humidity. I would think irradiation would vary from producer to producer but am not sure. And you have no way of knowing how old the dried peppers are in many cases. Dave PS edited to add that I know some have had success with using those peppers bought fresh.

It was a little red but I would'nt say ripe red.It was turning red.
