which salvia's are best?
Comments (20)Christie, If nothing else the splendens will be a bright beacon for them and they will investigate the splendends. If you have a chance go back to Lowes and get the Lady in Red. You won't be sorry, I guarantee it. Jenny The Lady in Red or any of the coccineas will more than likely be in larger 6 inch pots as opposed to the multi paks as they have too big of a root system for the multipacks unless they are little seedlings. Once they have developed 2-3 sets of true leaves there root system is already too extensive. One year I did use the splendens to put out very early before anything else was available. The bright red of the Bonfire did do the trick and then they went right to the feeders. Penny...See MoreWhich Salvia is your absolute favorite?
Comments (19)My first B and B cuttings went right in the soil around the mother plant (maybe five or six together) and were covered with plastic bottles. B and B actually has tubers under it sort of like dahlias and send out stolens or runners underground. I keep cuttings short, buring 2/3 of what I cut off, leaving just a pair of leaves above the soil. Just be sure to bury one leaf node (where you have removed the leaves). (That cover to hold a little moisture in lets you know when to water and then just watch for new growth. When new growth starts, give a little half strength plant food. It will probably take 6 to 9 weeks for them to be ready to be potted up....See MoreWhich salvia to start with??
Comments (7)I'm in central NC, and black and blue salvia did great for me. My regular soil is quite sandy, and my black and blue is planted in a raised bed with amended soil on a south-facing brick foundation wall. The plant that gets a bit more shade is smaller, but blooms fine. The plant that gets mostly sun is in the 3-1/2 to 4 feet tall range. It's hard to say because it's in the raised bed. It keeps the bees and hummingbirds happy and the green leaves are bright, the blue is electric and the black stems set them off nicely. Salvia coccinea 'snow nymph'would be pretty in front, though it is says it is perenniel in zone 9....See MoreWhich plants in your garden do the hummingbirds favor?
Comments (36)My husband & I have not caught them at the Lantana bushes yet. But they do love our Sages & Salvia's. I am growing a Trumpet Vine (not the Invasive Type) Training it into a Tree (Topiary) Form but it will be another 3-4 yr.s before it will be blooming. They really love our Love & Wishes Salvia & our Cherry Chief (Autumn Sage greggii)-it is a red color that gets their attention & it must have great nectar. It is taking the Texas heat & humidity well. I am going to add more as the Black-Chin's visit it every day 3 times a day. The Hot Lips Sage/Salvia was a Huge hit this Spring. I have just cut 1/3 of it back & fed it so it will be ready to re-bloom again when it starts cooling off. I have Turk's Cap growing but have not seen any go to it. Trumpet Creeper is growing but not blooming yet & our Mexican Sunflowers are always a hit with the Ruby's. Always looking for more plant's that they love! _ Thanks for the input! Appreciate it!...See Moresarahbn
