Blue Bedder Salvia, Will it come back or is it a late sprouter

(bloomer)...I started them from seed last year,they bloomed also...I'm waitng to see some kind of life, I haven't cut back the dried out stems, should I? or will they even come back at all?

Juanital, according to Betsy Clebsch, S. farinacea is hardy to 25F and will not come back from its rootstock after a cold winter.

Not looking for a third color this time, but I did consider doing a blue with a lighter blue, then plant an initial (letter B for the name of my schoolhouse)in a white; but maybe next year. Yes, Dusty Miller is good, I tried that by planting blue salvia then bordering it with Dusty Miller one season; but, the salvia grew taller and over the DM. The bed is a crescent shape with a boxwood hedge (kept clipped 8") around it. So height is the main concern when choosing the annual(s) to fill it. The lobelia was the perfect height, but not the perfect plant for the area. Last year I tried putting purple salvia in the center and blue ageratum as the border. The ageratum got more foliage than bloom for some reason, got tall, and then ragged looking quickly, even tho I pinched back frequently.

I didn't think it was going to come back but probably about mid spring some did on the wood(?) three from last year out of 12 plants. I found one that had reseeded in a different part of garden...I had WS in 2004(5). Couldn't find the seeds in the store this year, I think it was a MS brand. If you had any stems broken off you could also propagate them from those, which I did cos our rambuntious puppies had run through them and broke off two stem. They did take...I didn't want to give up on them...they are just tooo beautiful... juanital

First year blooms, but this picture was taken second year and so the salvias bloomed in May - I think I remember waiting (impatiently) for the Salvias to bloom the first year but they finally did - maybe more towards end June (?) (I can't remember). But the second year, they bloomed in May ( picture was from the second year). I don't know how well they survive LI - but here they came back, even when we had teens over the winter. As a matter of fact, they were green all winter. I am a former New Yorker and I think they will be fine - maybe protect a bit if it really gets cold. I border zone 6 and 7. I have planted salvia victoria for many years in several different places in my flower beds. I have noticed that in my full sun bed with good drainage throughout the winter my victoria comes back from the same roots. In my partial shade beds where it tends to be a little moist during the winter my salvia does not come back from the same roots but it does reseed it self sometimes. Victoria is sold as an annual here but I have had good luck at having it to come back without extra mulching. This will be my first year that I am trying blue bedder I am starting them from seed but the seed pack I purchased said that it was a perennial if it is anything like victoria I am sure that it will be enjoyed in my garden for many years to come.

You might watch out for some self-sown plants though :)

I live in the VERY center of PA and our temps range from -20-40 according to what they say (not that we see it! LOL). I planted blue bedder almost two years ago from seed. It came up last year as a surprise to me because I forgot about it! I read posts here on GW about it not surviving in my area so I assumed it was gone. I had moved another plant nearby it and noticed sprouts and just thought it was more of the other plant that I needed to take out. We got a good week of rain and I went out to move the coreopsis two days ago and realized it was my blue bedder sage coming back! So don't give up yet if you haven't already!
