Comments (37)While this isn't gardening, when I was 16 I worked for a summer in a corner grocery that also sold ice cream, mini pizzas, hot dogs, etc. The girl who used to work there spent all summer painting a beautiful mural on the outside wall. She finally got done. It was beautiful. Everyone was very proud and happy. The next morning, we came to work and found red paint splashed all over it. We didn't even get to display the finished piece for a full day. The girl was heartbroken and understandably didn't feel like starting over again. They just painted the wall white. I've never understood why people do that. I also read in another thread somewhere someone who had expensive prize irises, daylilies, etc. They came home early one day to find someone else's car parked in their driveway. An entire family, kids, too, were in her backyard digging up her flowers. They had shovels, pails, everything. This was a planned expedition. When they were discovered, they simply took all of their stolen flowers, got in their car, and drove off. On a slightly related note, I have a beautiful copper hanging that I wanted to put out, but it's still in its box. I don't know if it would last a day before disappearing....See Moreanyone ever tried cayenne pepper to keep squirrels away
Comments (9)Lycheeluva, With a major squirrel infestation, I think trapping, or possibly exclusion, is going to be the only means of effective control. In the past few years I've perfected my squirrel trapping techniques. Of the 7 different traps I've tried (although I've not tried Kania) the best is the Tomahawk single door (measures 24" X 7" X 7"). I would encourage you not to go with Havahart. You'll catch some squirrels with a Havahart, but their solid panel doors inhibit the squirrels from entering. I've watched them from my window, they just won't go in a Havahart like they will a Tomahawk that has a wire mesh door. My opinion for this phenomena is that a wire mesh door is more open and appears like a bunch of twigs to the squirrel, whereas a solid panel door looks like an enclosure from a squirrel perspective. Tomahawk also has a better trip mechanism. Scott has mentioned before that Kania's work well for him, but my preference is for an open trap in which the bait is highly visible. It has worked very well for me, in spite of people dumping their live catches in the area. One advantage of Kania is that it is a lethal trap. This can be a real advantage, as there is a lady that will come on my property and let my squirrels loose if she sees them in a live trap. It makes the squirrels trap shy. For those few squirrels, I bought a pellet gun with a scope. I'm not understanding why disposal should be a problem. Can you simply dig a shallow hole and bury them? If you mulch your trees, you could bury them there, and they would give you the advantage of feeding your trees. I suppose another option would be to put the squirrels in plastic bags and stick them in the freezer until trash day. They are loosely considered a game animal, and it's appropriate for game to go in the freezer....See Morechoosing a peach and plum
Comments (5)Ann, there is no such thing as an easy care peach, so before you get a tree look into how much work is needed, in particular if you want to grow it organically. The easiest way I have found to grow peaches organically is to bag them in cotton drawstring bags when they are small. That will keep the bugs off of them. If you don't bag or spray they will all be bug-ridden. You will also probably need to spray for diseases such as brown rot and bacterial spot - two or more times a year. If your temps are not going below -8F and you are by the lake, you should be able to grow most varieties. The old heirloom peaches are wonderful but there are not many nurseries selling them. Vintage Virginia Apples was selling Early Crawford at some point; it is one of the best. Elberta is a fine old peach still sold in many places. Most of the 100+ year old varieties are whites since that was the popular color back then, so there are more whites to pick from. Scott...See MoreSub zero temp on peach blossems
Comments (17)I grow a lot of herbs (several kinds of basil) and lots of zinnias...i also plan on growing some borage ... i have quite a few coneflowers and other perennials. I do it mostly for the bees. They love herbs and the butterflies (monarchs) go nuts for zinnias. I actually had zinnias flowering in early June last year and never stopped until the a hard freeze in the fall. I also grow pyrethrum from seed. Last year i actually had it flower and then the rabbit attacked! stupid thing just bit the flower heads off. They take forever to flower so i started them yesterday in hopes they'll flower by late Aug/Sept. Beautiful and highly toxic flowers. I gave up on onions years ago. I use to grow bottle type onions (Italian something) and alisia craig (huge)...but they are just so cheap to buy and i tend to use more dried onion in my cooking. I do have some leeks i'm trying (I grew them in the past..kind of fun). A couple tomatoes is good enough (slicers and grape). I grew a bunch of peppers last year but still have a bag full in the freezer. I should have some blueberries flowering for the first time this year....See Morewilmington_islander
