Which Salvia is this?????????????

Hi:

I got this seed last year and do not remember what kind of salvia it is. It's a medium height, flower not as dark as the regular red ones, but more between red and dark pink. It's not the Yvonne, because I remember that as being dark red flowers and tall plants. Mine were in between the tall and dwarf, so I call them semi-dwarf. If someone can help me with the name that would be great.

Can you provide us with a picture? If not, can you describe the leaf, its margins, textures, where the hairs are, etc. Is the flower tube long or short, how big are the lips relative to the tube, etc.

Try going to Robin Middleton's web page and scan through some of them for close matches.

Solved the mystery. I found the old ziplock bag( that I had clearly marked with the name) in my basement while cleaning my garden spot to start my seeds. It's Salvia Coccinea-Lady in Red. It is such a lovely midsize Salvia that really demands attention. I had planted it in a round planting bed in my front yard and every time people walked by they would stop and admire it because it also attracks a lot of different bees. It bloomed up till frost killed it. I collected a box full of dried flowers thru the summer which I now have to clean up and offer. Not sure when that will happen but hopefully soon.

Hello~ I second the ID as Salvia argentea/artemis, Silver Sage, although I usually see it listed as S. argentea. I have grown it in several different gardens and find it to be a biennial here in WV. Yours is a nice size and looks healthy. Sometimes, if it gets too much water, it will rot at the crown, so it should always have good drainage. I like to use this plant as a foil to blue or purple flowering herb plants like false indigo or the Nepetas like 'Walkers Low'.

For the 2nd year in a row the greggii hybrid Cherry Queen won the first to bloom competition. The first flowers opened this morning, a pleasant sight after a winter that featured temperatures as low a 3F. It is blooming when some of the other greggii/microphylla are just barely sprouting and others may require an obituary. Cherry Queen will be in bloom until hard freeze in the fall.

I see most of the action on greggii and most of that action is the various species of skipper butterflies. Strangely, since their flowers are so close, there does not seem to be nearly as much action on microphylla. It will be something to check out once butterfly numbers start to peak in another month. The larger butterflies seem to have trouble landing on most New World salvia flowers, bumble bees have the same problem. The old world types seem much better for butterflies with their flowers packed close to the stem.
