tazmanian habanero sick

Yow, my large and strong Tazmanian Habanero plant just wilted and is dying. Have not been overwatering or fertilizing. Yes, the weather is cooler but not even cold here in SoCal. Noticed ants on plant. Could they have eaten up the roots? Plant in raised bed, not soggy. Use Safer insect repellant. Just picked all the peppers off it and am scratching my head. Any ideas out here?

Steve
