Awesome seedling photos, Beetle! They're adorable! I must try those one of these days! I'll have to keep my eyes open for some yellow flowered Clivia seeds! My Clivia is happy sitting in the dappled sun of my southern window... it's planted in a porous bonsai type of medium, as I mentioned before... I water is only when it's really dry, and I'll probably water it a bit less over winter. I'm sweating the seed-starting I must do shortly... but I have to get these rain lily and hippi seeds planted soon, or they'll lose viability. I also have some daylily seeds to start, from crosses I made earlier this summer. This week, we'll be hanging new shop light fixtures over my plant shelves, and this will give me plenty of space to grow over winter. I almost brought a professional grow light set-up back with me from up north, but it wouldn't fit in the car! I was rather disappointed, but I can pick it up next trip. I did score a nice digital thermometer, though... and that will help with determining what plants go where in my growing environment! I'll be checking out that Clivia seed starting link this week, too... you never know when opportunity will strike, and I'd like to be prepared with the right knowledge! Hi Frank, I have this one, the leaves may be longer than you describe and are 4.25in wide. The flowers are orange. This plant belonged to a friend of my aunt who had it since (maybe) the 60's, and I guess it about 50yrs old - I've had it about 10yrs. I was going to repot it in the spring, so if its what you are looking for and can wait till the end of May let me know. I would prefer to trade for something rather than sell -- We frequent the same forums so I may have other things that interest you too. Mike

Sue, Clivia is the name of the genus. There are 5 species of clivia. Miniata (the only open type flower), Gardenii, Caulescense, Robusta and Mirabilis (the latter 4 all pendulous types. The of course there are hybrids between the different species. Hope this helps??

Clivias are cousins to hippeastrums (amaryllis). The buds form deep in the heart of the plant four to six months before they emerge. If conditions are favorable, the stalk will rise from between the leaves before the buds open. It is not unusual for the stalk to stay short the first time a clivia blooms. Things that can encourage the stalk to lengthen are using a fertilizer that has a higher ratio of potassium than phosphorous or nitrogen year around; a 6-8 week cold & dry spell in the fall; bright light and adequate watering in summer and when breaking dormancy in late winter; and a good genetic heritage. You can't do much about the last factor (except discarding the duds), but you can work on the others.
