Also, your tags are WAY TOO LONG. Cut some 3 inches and only use numbers or letters as your code. then record your code and any notes into a sprial binder. I placed mine in potting soil and kept them outside. Got lots of sprouts, then over night something ate them so it looks like the next try I will buy some copper screen to place over them and give them a better change. I have always grown them in pots outside as my first experience with them was by accident as when I saw the seeds I thought they were just little papery and nothing else so I tossed them into the flower bed and ended up with a few more bulbs that bloomed in a few years without any care what so ever. So I guess mother nature does a better job than I do, but the fun is getting things to grow and sharing. Thank all of you for all your post helps make gardening so much more fun Paul

Thank you for posting this question. I too found bulbils on some new lilies this year and started them earlier in the summer when they started to drop. I searched on this forum and found a good post on how to start them but the NALS site has the same information. I also tried hybridizing this year and was about to post a question about how to germinate seeds. My seeds are still ripening in the pods but it won't be long now before they are ready to harvest. Kayman, thank you for that link it also has the seed germination process. I also found that it has the online register database which is something I had been looking to find. Is there someplace that keeps a large database with pictures? All but 2 of mine are NOID's from box store mixes that I'd like to find names for if possible. Not that I don't appreciate them w/o names but it would just be easier to have a name than to assign a strange garden name like "the lily by the fence".

Canna seeds are tough. For best germination, they should be nicked. To nick them, you can use a file, a grinder, or even a drill to drill into the seed a little. You just want to break the hard surface of the seed just enough to see a little bit of the creamy white interior of the seed. After nicking, soak the seed in water for a day or two. You should see the seeds swell as they soak up the water. Then plant in moist soil. Keep the soil moist and warm and your seeds will sprout. If started early, like during winter in a greenhouse, cannas grown from seeds can bloom the first year. However, the seeds from the hybrid cannas do not produce plants like the parent plant. They usually revert back to the small flowered type with traits of both the wild canna and the parent. Once in a great while, you may get lucky and a viable canna will grow from one of those seeds, but it doesnt happen often.
