I'm guessing by the "bulb" you mean the hip, which is the seed pod. Here are a couple of articles from Paul Barden's web site: Germinating Rose Seeds by Dr. Manners My Rose Seed Starting Method (1996-97 Season) by Henry Kuska. Also, go over to the Rose Propagation and Exchange forum, scroll down and search for "seeds". Note that your plants are hybrids. Which means that what you get from the seeds may or may not (not, usually) look like the plant that produced the seeds. The only way to reproduce your plants is propagating via cuttings (you can search for that on the Rose Prop forum too). Enjoy!

I couldn't get the link to work for me, but did try Googling Brownell roses to see if I could find the article. Nope. But I did find this article by Dan Russo http://www.heritagerosefoundation.org/4resources/Rosa%20Mundi/3/RM3_Russo.pdf and it brought up an interesting point that we had been discussing on another thread about the fact that some roses are/were not intended to be grown on their own roots. The article states "When grown as the Brownells instructed in their catalogues, i.e., grafted on multiflora rootstock with the bud union placed several inches deep, they have indeed proven to be very long-lived, floriferous roses." Even though this has been mentioned very recently, it had not truly registered with me that a rose might actually have been designed to be grafted. Wow...sorry, but that's a mind bender for me. I'm still only gonna grow own root roses, but a serious crack in my mental fortress has been noted.... Here is a link that might be useful: Dan Russo article

Priapus the well endowed was the patron god of gardens and gardeners. It is news to me that Geoff Hamilton blooms at all. I noticed the author recommends hard pruning for DAs roses. Maybe that would keep them in bounds.

Hi Tom, I do my cuttings in the fall and stick them in the ground for over the winter. I cover them with a clear plastic dome.....a 2 liter soda bottle would be ok if the leaves will fit and in the spring around April and May they are rooted usually, I only had 2 or 3 that didn't take. I have never tried the misting system but quite a few people have success with it. I don't do my cutting in the summer because it is too hot. About getting hips to grow on your roses. For your zone this has do be done in May, June and early part of July. The hip has to be on the plant for 4 months before the cold weather sets in. It is the process of taking pollen from one plant and applying it to another to get a cross of two different roses. Of course you can do this indoors under lights. Which I might start soon. You can find lots of sites that will help you with this. Just put in google search, "Hybridizing Roses". Good Luck to you.
