Weighing all the preferences you've stated, a rose I encourage you to consider is 'Gruss an Aachen, Climbing.'. IMO, it's an ideal climber for planting near an entrance because it's not overly rampant, and is practically prickle-free. The blossoms have an English rose "look". Opening with a distinct peachy tint and maturing to a creamy white, the blooms meet ALL your color preferences. The foliage is lovely and, under my growing conditions, is very healthy. It's a rose that performs well as a young plant, and, in my experience, seems only to improve with each passing season. The major problem with GaA, Cl for American gardeners is that it's always been extremely rare in this country. There's good news, however: In late 2011, budwood for the rose was provided to Roses Unlimited in SC. It's possible that RU may have a few plants available this season, and I expect it will be readily available from them for fall 2013/spring 2014 planting.

How vigorous are you talking about? You could go with John Cabot or William Baffin for the pinks. Those are very hardy for your winters too. Do you want them to bloom repeatedly, because many are one time bloomers that will bloom in spring. I believe that karl_bapst_rosenut lives in Indiana. He may have better ideas about your climbers. He is very knowledgeable about roses. I'm not sure about the white climbers. Alba Maxima may be good but I think it's a spring bloomer only. Maybe you could try climbing iceberg. There are several great places to purchase climbing roses. Rogue Valley roses, Pickering nurseries, Heirloom roses, for starters.

I'm sorry, but none of these make really good climbers for a true zone 4, unless you have a special sheltered yard . Even zone 5-ers can't imagine the difference in cane hardiness stepping down just that one more zone number. Ramblin' Red - wonderful red reblooming rose: not cane hardy in zone 4...and unfortunately neither are the other new roses by Bill Radler according to all reports. Dortmund - (the Kordes rose that Mikeber suggests) very pretty single flower with leaves that are shiny like holly: not cane hardy in zone 4. Prairie Princess...not a climber in zone 4, just a small shrub (because its canes are not winter hardy.) Awakening - beautiful rose, just not cane hardy in zone 4. Really, I've wasted years trying these 'almost' hardy climbers. If you plan on making a privacy screen out of that chain link fence, you need the hardiest roses you can find. That is the Canadian bred roses, no doubt about it. William Baffin, William Booth, John Davis, John Cabot, Henry Kelsey, Capt. Samuel Holland, Quadra, Alexander Mackenzie and the like - you can't go wrong with any of these. The suggestion of a large shrub is a good one as well opening the way for many, many cane hardy roses to choose from: rugosas, albas, gallicas, and large roses in the "shrub" class like Applejack, Marie Victorin, Wanderin' Wind to name a few. The best advice I can give you (unless you want to start your roses over and over each spring) is to be sure to look for roses that are **cane** hardy to zone 4 or lower, not just 'crown' hardy (which means that they will survive but have to re-grow.)

Mad Gallica is a real expert on roses and I've learned lots from her posts, but I'm going to disagree with her today a bit. I have an Autumn Sunset climbing rose, bred by Mike Lowe in southern NH. It has double, yellow to apricot, medium scented roses. It repeats on and off for me all summer (my only repeating rose) and has overwintered for me with no protection other than its usual mulch, a deeply planted bud union, and nearness to a large builing. It grows to well over my head in an arching form (I haven't gotten a trellis up yet as I thought it would take several years to get big enough to need one) and has made it through either 1 or 2 central NH winters (last winter was a bit warmer than usual, maybe to only -15, but had little snow cover to serve as protection) with virtually no damage. I really like this one, and my husband has noticed it, and he doesn't necessarily notice everything in the garden. I do agree that most climbers aren't worth the garden space in colder areas of New England, but this one is a gem.
