Anyone starting plants in coffee cans?

I'm starting a large number of plants to give away this year, so I'm considering different methods of starting my seedlings rather early indoors. I have dozens of old coffee cans, and with proper drainage they are the right size to do what I want, but I have one concern. Prolonged moisture and warmth will accelerate the formation of rust around the bottom of the cans. I know this because I tested a few already.

Concentrated amounts of rust can alter the pH pf soil. Given that I'm only going to use the cans to start the seedlings and then pass them on to be transplanted into the ground I'm hoping it won't make too much of an impact, but I'm unsure.

Any thoughts? Does anyone here use anything similar?
