A couple photos and one of my experiment

This one is Elle.sure love this rose.

And Ebb Tide,was getting close to dark when i took this one

and my Experiment; I cut the bottom out of a gallon milk jug,then pushed the roots of a little tomatoe plant up through the spout, then filled the jug with soil.Got 2 tomatoes on it,and they are bigger then they look in this picture.They are about 3 inches in diameter.

Elle is a top rose in my garden, too. I love it!! Hard to believe tomato season is around the corner--that is pretty clever... how are you holding the jug up?

Very pretty Jean. Are you pleased with Ebb Tide? I'll have to ask again at the end Sept how well the rose bush and the blooms do in the heat. I'll have to share that trick with DH, he's only got one tomato plant growing this year.

BTW don't bump it up, but if you have't looked I put up one last pic for you on that cat thread Wed. It's on page 2 now:)

Alexa, the maple giving Alex Summers a hard time, is that a red maple or a Japanese maple? I am taking delivery this Saturday of two Japanese maples which are the full moon maples, one the chartreuse green and the other the gold autumn colors. That will bring my count of Japanese maples to 5, not too many unless I have trouble with the roots. Our problem here is not rocks and such, it is rampant tree and shrub roots. Like oak, pecan, sweet gum, camphor trees, and very large ligustrum, crape myrtle, dogwoods, camellias, and so on. The only maples anywhere around will be my fairly young Japanese trees.

It's hard to come up with pubic transit suggestions without knowing the location. For example, Zipcar is an obvious alternative if it's available in your area. And without knowing the activities, it's difficult to know whether one of you could coordinate, with one person dropping the other off at their activity and meeting up again later. This might include using some public transportation, so that you can meet up at reasonable places and times. (And the obvious thing, which is part marriage advice and part financial, is to find activities you can do together.) But let's back up and look at the big picture. I'm still stuck at how a three year old car is costing $400/month and a four year old car is costing $600/month. All I can guess is that they're either long term loans (bad idea) or leases (worse idea). Or maybe it's insurance, in which case shop around and see whether you're carrying more insurance than you need. If they're loans, you need to look at what's left on the loan versus the value of the car today. You may not be saving enough by selling versus waiting till it's paid off. If you're upside down, it could be worse. If you can get money out of it by selling, then first look around for what you could afford to buy, or to what extent you could use If it's a lease, are there fees for early termination? Where do you stand as far as mileage? I don't know anything about lease assumption services, but they may be worth doing some homework. If you do decide to buy a used car, you should research how to do so effectively. If you have a trustworthy mechanic, then you can keep the risk manageable.

What Michelle said- Ebb Tide is on my want list! How's the repeat on it for you Jean? I've always wanted to try the upside down tomato thing too- and you've already got two just about ready to eat! Yippeee!

Mark; I drilled some little holes around the bottom of the jug and I had a old basket hanger,(the basket had rotted) and hooked the wire hanger onto the jug,and hung it up in a crepe Myrtle tree.Some thing deeper then this gal jug would work better,as it drys out pretty fast.Have to water it every day.
Leslie:I am very happy with Ebb Tide so far.Its still in the nursery pot and seems to be taking the heat really well.It was 95 here yesterday with a heat index of 102 and it didn't wilt like some of my roses do,and today it has blooms every where.Thanks for the extra picture,i will go see it in a few minutes.
Nancy;The repeat on Ebb Tide is great.repeats real fast,and has a wonderful fragrance,too.I am so happy with it,that I plan to ask the lady at the nursery to try and get me another one.

Great idea, I've been wondering how to understand what size container is best for which tomato. Those tomato 'bags' are a reasonable idea, but one size for all wouldn't be best for every tomato, would it? And I think they are so over price, I would never buy one. I do how ever love and joyfully pay for "Down Under Pots" because they should, with care, last generations and they are a quality product. I have tuberous begonias hanging in all of mine now and I am amazed how they love these pots. The tubers are getting so huge, I don't think I can get them out of the pots now. Never had that happen in regular pots! I leave them in all winter and when they show fresh sprouts I hang them upsidedown.
Can you see through the milk jugs when wet or dry? what is a large jug to recycle as a tomato hanger, have to give this lots of thought.
Also, for a large tomato, the weight + water and fruit is an important consideration
