I like Bolero a lot. Is yours in a pot? Mine still is. I want to get Julia Child also. I understand it doesn't fade.

The Julia Child and Bolero look nice. Is that the real color for Tea Clipper? It looks faded. How stable is the color on it? Mine is growing but hasn't bloomed yet. Does Tea Clipper have a nice fragrance? I am curious and would like a heads up on what to look for.

Cynthia: you are my savior many times !! THANK YOU. In June you saved me from killing Firefighter the 4th time. Thanks to you, I took that off from my buy-list, and Roses Unlimited gave me Pretty Lady Rose instead (bunnies killed that along with acidic grass clippings in 2020). I thought about buying Firefighter as grafted since I killed the own-root 3 times, then thanks to your post, I won't attempt it as grafted. Here's how I killed Firefighter as own-root 3 times: 1) 2014 tree-root invaded the 3rd-year own-root Firefighter. I should had moved it, but left it there, so it died when cane-borers took over due to lack of calcium (trees steal lots of calcium and water). 2) Bought 2nd gallon-size Firefighter. Since it's low-thorn waterhog, I experimented planting it next to a rainspout. It died from freezing rain in winter. 3) Bought 3rd band-size Firefighter. I don't trust my zone 5a winter, so I potted it inside my unheated garage. In Feb. the temp. inside my garage was freezing single-digit. My refrigerator broke down, and I was busy storing food inside the garage and I forgot to cover Firefighter with a thermal blanket.

Moodyblue. In response to your 'unfragrant' Princess Of Wales rose which incidentally looks gorgeous, there is another similar one that does have a wonderful fragrance. That is A Whiter Shade Of Pale. Although it opens with a blush center that fades to pure white within 2 days.It withstands rain very well without any sign of spoiling. Oui hoovb - it gets very, VERY hot and humid here. That's why I'm so ecstatic over the spring flush when I can go out and enjoy the weather. I basically stay inside in the AC all July and August. The fall flush is equally appreciated for those reasons. I love seeing roses in October and November. I'm hoping for good things from Tea Clipper, it only has three blooms on it now, I don't know how many buds, but it is over 4 feet high but narrower, maybe 2 1/2 to 3 feet wide. I'm going to have to support it in some way while it is going through its awkward teenage phase. It is in full sun in really good soil so I'm hoping for the best. It is grafted. I decided almost all Austins do better grafted, at least here. I do have canker problems here too, Maggie always gets it but manages to throw out new canes every year. I lost a lot of roses a few years back to canker after the Easter freeze. TG didn't have any problems with it this past winter even though it was a colder one than normal. Maybe it is because we didn't have the normal January thaw and no real freeze/thaw cycles at all. Hopefully my pyramid structure will help support the canes so they don't snap off. Own root Floribundas, Grandifloras & Hybrid Teas?

Well, considering how much a fan of own-root roses here in my cold zone, this was an eye-opening exercise. I went through my entire alphabetical list of 800 or so roses, a majority of which are flori/HT/grandiflora roses, and noted any that I considered excellent on own roots. It turns out a lot of outstanding bloomers that I vaguely had considered floris or HTs were actually shrubs, and many of my best HTs were in fact grafted. Dang. I have a bad survival rate with bare root roses, but it looks like I should be cautious with the HT own root roses on a second round. My impression was that the floribundas weren't particularly bothered by being own root and very few of mine were grafted, but by far my best bloomers among the HTs tended to be the grafted ones. Who knew?? Here's my list of the definite prolific or otherwise robust roses in these categories: Floribunda: - prolific Bolero Floral Fairy Tale LavaGlut Mandarin Ice Grand Duc Henri Occhi di Fata Pinocchio Suni Louisa Stone/Guinevere Pillow Talk Brothers Grimm Fairy Tale Impatient Roman Holiday Alice Pat Champagne Moment Bad Worishofen/Pink Emely Eutin Hot Cocoa HTs Beverly Francis Dubreuil Cubana Comtesse de Segur Dames de Chenonceau Acropolis Aloha Headliner Nigrette (no worse than it would do grafted) Papageno Lafter Maid of Honor Spiced Coffee Golden Buddha Birthday Girl Grandif Ã¯Â¿Â½" Paloma Blanca Paw Maw Lagerfeld Earth Song (extremely well) Mother of Pearl I ended up needing an honorable mention for the HTs, with roses that are robust and vigorous growers, but not terribly prolific or frequent rebloomers. I figure that can be true of any of the HTs and it wouldn't depend on them grafted or not, so for what it's worth here are the good HTs on own roots, for me: Peggy Rockefeller Karl Herbst Intermezzo (surprisingly hardy for a lavender Dot rose) Neptune Henri Matisse Careless Love Charlotte Brownell Harry G Hastings Madame Delbard Break oÃ¢ÂÂDay Sophisticate I agree that Double Delight is a very weak grower under any circumstances, but virtually microscopic if own root (and I've tried several times). Beautiful pics. I especially love the one of JC. I just ordered one from the homedepot.com half off sale. Can't wait to get that baby in the ground. I hope mine is as pretty as your picture!

Is Bolera fragrant? It sure looks like it is! Gorgeous.

Carla, Bolero is in the ground, second year. JC fades to a pale but nice yellow.
The Bustopher Â yes Tea Clipper is faded but I just missed its prime time. There are more to come and from what I can see, it has a nice big bloom but fades quickly. IÂll be watching this one. Fragrance not much, but again, itÂs early.
Hsummer Â my Julia C. was Â½ off last summer end of season. It was a 1 Â½ grade but has taken off nicely this spring. Bolero is very fragrant. I love this rose.

These are beautiful roses but I really like Julia Child. That's a great pic of a trio with a bud. This is a wonderful shade. I'm always sorry I didn't get this rose when I see the pics of it.

Yippee. I love that Julia Child. I just bought one at the Home Depot store for ten bucks. It was small but so healthy looking. Also bought Hot Cocoa for ten bucks. So tickled to get them both. Beautiful roses you have. Judy

Tea Clipper just had another bloom but it was during our 4 day heat wave which just wreaks havoc on my west facing roses. It seems to bloom and fade rather quickly. Stay tuned.

Your Julia Child is beautiful. Mine died in the nursery pot shortly after I bought it for DW for Velentine's Day. Ugh! She replaced it with Tuscan Sun on the guarantee.

I have my Tea Clipper and most of my new roses this year in my pot ghetto so that I can look at them before I assign them ground space. My Tea Clipper bloomed. It had a nice apricot color when it opened in the morning, but by evening it looked like the posted picture above. It had completely washed out. I did not notice much of any fragrance to it either. I'll just watch it for the rest of the year before I decide what to do with it.

In contrast, my Lady Emma Hamilton does have a nice fragrance and seems to hold its color a little better. I will keep my eye on it also.

This is an update on my Tea Clipper. It has been doing some serious growing. It is having more flowers now, and, although small, they seem to be holding their color a bit better. They are also now coming out with some fragrance. This one may just need time. I will just watch it and see how it does. If it does something unusual I will say so.

I cut a bud of Tea Clipper for work and it's so different in the vase. Darker with a nice delicate fragrance. If I had an eastern exposure, I would replant it but I don't. The plant is busy growing and producing lots. I must feed it this weekend and keep it watered. Another heat wave is building. Ugh.
