KANTHARI Super Hot pepper... I am too excited !!

Friends,

My friend in Bangalore gave me this exciting news just now (with a photograph).

My Kanthari chilli peppers for seeds are drying and will be ready to be shipped with another lesser known very hot bird's eye variety called "Chot Mensinkkai".

This is slightly smaller than Hot Thai chilli pepper but hotter than them Thais.

Next is a variety called "Gundu Mozakka". I will post the snaps as soon as I get them .

Hurrah....My next year is already made.

i dont have any of the exact ones on your list, but i do have some very hot peppers. i have a small trade of white bullet habenero, and i also have some orange manzano. i might have some more. the manzano are my favorite of any i have grown, as a bonus they are very cold tolerant, extremely large, and can be overwintered, are perennial in the right climate. not as hot as some of those you list, but definitely very hot, good flavor, and juicy thick. if you dont want to trade for these.... i was mostly writing because i am interested in the sase for the older tomato seeds you have on your list. i will attach my trade list too.... You're welcome. I didn't mention what would be the key factor for me, which is a big issue since I live in a county with tons of grasslands prone to grassfires and wildfires, and it is this: We have a lot of fires every year that start when hay is baled too wet, and the wet hay on the interior of the bale heats up as decomposition begins, very similar to what can happen inside a compost pile. The hay bale begins burning, and then the fire spreads to the surrounding pasture or, if the hay is already stacked in a barn, it spreads to the barn. You wouldn't believe how often this happens. Burning bales are almost impossible to extinguish, and require a lot of time and tons of water. So for me, the last thing I want is a bale of hay or straw that I'm constantly wetting down in the interior of the bale, because it just might decompose enough to start burning. You aren't turning the bale the way you turn a compost pile. It might never be an issue in a garden or lawn surrounded by green grass where a fire is unlikely to spread much even if it starts in a bale, but my garden is surrounded by woodland and grassland that aren't very green in summer, so I don't want to encourage anything that might burn for fear it quickly would spread. And, on a snake note, I have a snake tale from today too. I went down into the tornado shelter to get some canning jars stored there, and as I reached the bottom step, I saw a snake skin on a folding camp chair about 3 or 4' away. Since our tornado shelter stays closed almost all the time and we have screening on the inside so insects and snakes cannot come down the air vents, I knew that whatever snake shed that skin was in the tornado shelter with me. I grabbed a dozen jars and hightailed it out of there, taking great care not to disturb a thing...for fear the snake was hiding behind or underneath something. A couple of hours later, Tim went down into the cellar, found a black and green racer, and tossed it out of the cellar. The snake probably crawled down into the shelter one day a few weeks ago when Tim was airing it out. I sure wasn't happy to see that snakeskin, and am grateful it happened today, and not on a day when a storm sent me fleeing to the shelter. This is the first time we've ever had a snake in there as far as we know. I'll never be a fan of snakes, but at least it was a non-venomous one. Our son stepped on a copperhead once and it didn't bite him, and I just consider him extremely lucky. If one had slithered over my foot, you would have heard me screaming all over the state. 1. No, it's not too late. I'm in zone 5b and I just started my slow-to-germinate Bhut Jolokias a couple of days ago. I'll start all of my annuum varieties in another couple of weeks. 2. Get your soil tested. If putting stuff in the ground is the start of your problems, them getting the soil tested is the start of your solution. In my area, I send my soil samples up to University of Connecticut (Go Huskies!) and they charge $8 per sample. Well worth it. Most soil test labs also tell you what to add and how much. 3. Don't put the peppers in the ground too early. Night temperatures should be above 50F (10C) before you set them out. It also helps a LOT to warm the soil by putting down plastic mulch. Peppers can take care of themselves pretty well, but they hate cold or wet feet. 4. If you are industrious, you can extend the season by building a little hoop house over your plants. This also gives them a great head start. I built one about 20 feet long and 4 fet high for less than $40. One of these days, I'll write up the plans and offer them for free on this site.

even in zone 8 it is probably just a little too cold still for pepper sprouts. different seeds like different temperatures, some will germinate even when cool, but peppers are one of of the most extreme. they stay dormant until the temperature gets really hot, then the seed feels it is safe to come out and bloom =) anyway this is the long way of saying, that i would assume they havent gotten enough heat to sprout, and will be along in a few weeks.... mostly my assumption is based on previous experience and that peppers are really extreme in their love of heat. even tomatoes and eggplants, other kinds that need a certain amount of warmth, will sprout before the peppers.

The friend in Bangalore is actually my clent.
They are so much large hearted that they presented me with a 2000 dollars laptop when I moved over to US 4 years back.

They would do anything for me.

Too funny,

My contacts in Bangalore were my service providers... I guess that's why they don't offer to grow peppers for me LOL. Seriously, we (both sides) worked out a win / win deal. Even though I've since moved on, I still consider them valued future partners and would not hesitate doing business with them again.

Sounds like you have a great relationship going there NJA.

I'd like to line up for seeds too, if you will be sharing/trading. I use a lot of Thai chilies and this looks similar.

All of you will get seeds and that's a promise. Previously, I had asked for about 25 gms of seeds. But I would get no lesser than 50 gms of seeds. This would make about 1000 seeds in total.
Hope my maths is correct. LOL

hey guys,

I have been informed last night that the parcel would be shipped by two different courier services. This is to safeguard my interest. If one is seized, atleast another one will reach. I am keeping my fingers crossed.
Saturday they will be courioered to US.
And , by the way, the declaration will state "Crushed Spices' and not chilli peppers or seeds.

It is also possible that I may be able to offer only a couple of seeds per person.

update on Kanthari seeds

I got a call from my friends in India that the courier service has refused to accept "crushed peppers" on the ground that spices not packed in commercial packing are destroyed by US customs.

I will have to find an laternate route and method soon.
Failing which, a friend is coming over to chicago in January 2010. He will carry it in his luggage.

Sorry folks . we will have to wait.
