cloning vs. tissue culture propagation

so has any one done both of these?

we all know cloning as taking cuttings off of a mother plant, and that works great but has anyone tried cloning by plant tissue culture?

and if so what were the results?

Yes and yes.

Tissue culture is expensive and requires a vented hood to work under if done properly. It's not widely employed except for high dollar or extremely hard to propagate stuff.

It is very easy to introduce "bad stuff" (mold/bacteria/etc) into your tissue culture if done in an unsanitary way. For the home gardener who only needs a few plants you might be able to get away with it, but cloning would be a whole lot easier anyway.

If you had something really special and for some reason needed to make a whole lot of it tissue culture would be an option. For a home gardener, taking cuttings is generally enough.

Also...which might be of more interest...tissue culture will take longer to produce a plant you can put into the ground compared to rooting a cutting as a start-to-finish process.

"you can buy great bananas in any market cheaply. You KNOW the whole idea is the fantastic foliage.Who wouldn't want to grow one?" I think that is highly debateable. People grow different plants for different reasons and one of the big attractors IMO for many people to grow bananas is not only the joy of producing their own bananas but the belief that not only may this allow them access to cultivars which are not in your average grocery store but also that the same bananas home-grown would taste better. I don't know about you but the only bananas at my grocery store are Cavendish unless I want to visit an Asian market. I personally have never seen Ice Cream or any of the other popular fruiting varieties for sale at VONS where I live. Laurence

I have the same opinion, Thuja. Harde to imagine. But, the growers are optimistic -- otherwise, they wouldn't invest in the program. If tissue culture 'boo is as easy to maintain as "luck bamboo," maybe it will become a garden mainstay. PeteJ, My understanding of Bamboo Select's tissue culture, is that the cloned plants grow at a faster rate than conventionally-derived starts from divisions and seed. The cultured cells grow more rapidly to "catch up" to the age and developmental stage of the parent plant from which they were taken. I have a Fargesia rufa from tissue culture, and it has grown more rapidly than several rhizome-derived and seedling F. rufa I have. The flowering stage Bamboo Select species are at, I can only guess about. I'd read that one of their species, F. rufa, was a relatively recent introduction to Europe and North America. I don't know whether they were obtained from seed or from divisions from wild stock. If the latter, then we have no way of knowing how old the parent plants are, and where they are in their cycle. Don't know about the other species they are growing.

It really depends on your definition of cheap and what materials and equipment you already have. The following sites and their links should be of some help as to what is involved. http://www.omnisterra.com/botany/cp/slides/tc/tc.htm http://www.kitchenculturekit.com/index.htm http://www2.carolina.com If you're only propagating a small number of plants the premade media are probably your best bet. I've tried the home made, fertiliser based TC media. They work OK for seed but you really need hormone supplemented media to do mericlone work well. The first webpage recommends Sigma and GIBCO media. Forget sourcing from these guys. Most of the big laboratory suppliers will not supply home users. I'm sure there are others who can supply media but as far as I'm aware you shouldn't have a problem sourcing supplies from Kitchen Culture Kits and or Carolina Biological Supplies. FWIW most cp's do well in 1/2X MS media + whatever hormones and biocides you want to put in(charcoal is generally not needed). Realistically you may be looking at spending a couple of hundred dollars at least in set up and media, especially when you consider the finetuning of your sterile technique. Ongoing costs are of course cheaper. It may end up cheaper to send the plants to a commercial flasking laboratory for propagation (eg an orchid flasking lab). Head over to the GW Orchid Forum and ask if there are any labs they'd recommend. They may seem expensive but they generally work out cheaper than a once off DIY venture.

Hello, Thank you for the replies. I was thinking along the lines of propagating Trachycarpus and other cold hard palms in order to provide stock for breeding greater hardiness. This has been working wonders for banana (way easier to tissue culture than palms). There are plenty of super hardy banana varieties around now and a lot of that has to do with the ability to rapidly multiply particularly cold tolerant varieties and make them readily available, which allows other growers to cross varieties and experiment in a lot of different places and produce good seedlings from good parents. Palms are difficult to propagate clonally so if there happens to be one plant that is spectacularly hardy it really isn't available to anyone else to try their hand at growing it. Bananas happen to have a significantly shorter life cycle and are easy to propogate so it is no surprise that new varieties are always appearing. Would be nice to do the same with palms. Ericthehurdler is right about cost. Many plants that are difficult to tissue culture are coaxed into propagation through somatic embryogenesis which is the tricking of plant tissue into forming embryos. Certain portions of the reproductive tissue of a plant are fairly responsive to this method. This method would likely require many transfers between different media and would take 2 years or more to go from a sample of plant tissue to a whole new plant in a pot, but the upside is you could make lots of identical plants in that period of time. I should also mention that by "vented hood" i mean a laminar flow hood.

thanks, i found this stuff at www.planttc.com and was wondering the ins and out you know? seems like a great idea but not to sure how it is in practice.

That kit is an insanely overpriced for what it offers.

There's barely $50 worth of stuff in that $250 kit.

Also, while it may be just fine for home propagators who can gamble with their plant material it does nothing to create a predictably sanitary workplace to do your tissue culture.

It's really not that hard to do, but it's not really something for many food crops for a variety of reasons. It's used a lot more in the floriculture industry.
