Pleasant surprises and disappointments

The roses are in full bloom now, and of course we are headed for July-like temperatures.

LIEBESZAUBER hardly ever disappoints:

First bloom on RONALD REAGAN wasn't that impressive. But I thought this one was. (I must admit that I avoided getting this rose for a long time because of the name. There are pros and cons to naming roses after political figures. Also, what a bummer if the rose you're named for turns out to be a weak grower or just generally disappointing.)

What a pleasant surprise ROSARIUM UETERSEN has been. I like the color, both in the darker newer blooms and the aging older ones. And they last a long time. The bush is in its second year.

COLETTE can't take the heat.

LAGUNA doesn't like heat either. Fragrant and very full blooms, but the aged blossoms are a mess.

Vigorous and thorny. Not pleasant to have to deadhead.

ETERNAL FLAME seems to always brown a bit and to not perfectly unfurl:

Can someone tell me the name of this rose? Have had it for about 7 years.

BELINDA growing at the neighbor's. Wish I had space.

SUNNY DELIGHT

LAVENDER LASSIE In its second year. Vigorous and I like the color. Some pest has made the leaves lacy; what might it be? Hate to blanket bushes with insecticide.

MOTHER OF PEARL Super rose, with bountiful bloom, good repeat, healthy foliage, and color that lasts long on bush. Form is not classic, but so what.

GRAND AMORE Red towards the orange spectrum.

PEACE in the morning light.

Such lovely pictures, mantis. Your opening reds and your closing Peace rose are wonderful--but then so is everything in between! : )

REGINA LOUISE -- Got it from RU last year, it got burnt by the sun while trying to put out its first two flushes, ALL the new canes and buds got scorched and wilted, it was a very sad sight. Never would I think that within the same summer, it could shoot out another flush again with so many fragrant blooms on long stems, it's such a work horse. Meanwhile the moles have been digging underneath it everyday! HONOR--Oh Honor! I feel very touched by how hard it works to produce flush after flush after flush, even in the extremly hot drought. The poor Dear had its soil hollowed out by the moles, and I had not watered it much. The minute I firmed the soil and watered it, it perked up and started giving me beautiful flowers again! I truly have a lot of repect for this rose.

Smartest decisions - a pair of rhus typhan trees that were weeds in my mother's garden. These have grown to well in a tricky location with handsome twisting branches. They are an American tree but they naturally bisect in a strongly bonsai manner. - Buying cheap box balls in an 'end of season' sale. Although balls aren't a right shape they quickly grow out and can be reformed into dumplings and hopefully mounds. - Buying rocks. Even though the Japanese warn against 'pauper' rocks - rocks that are of a different geological type/inferior to others - rocks soon weather and acquire character. I've not seen a Western evocation of the Japanese garden that has too many rocks. Getting some big ones delivered Tuesday :-) Biggest regrets - trying to structure the garden around bamboo. It grows too fast to make a design around. I tried using it for hedging but even with clipping it becomes shaggy and dispiriting to look at. - Buying ilex crenata, it's expensive and not very tough. - Planting a cyptomeria rather too central in the garden. It's getting some lovely layered looking cascades (which I clip to enhance) but it's also getting in the way of walking round- but until my new hornbeam hedge grows it stays to provide enclosure.

I research pretty well and don't buy things often on impulse so I I don't have many things I could whose performance I would surprise me. But I do have an exception. I was in a store once and started conversing with a guy and he brought up the fact that he had a presto Pizzazz Pizza Oven. It's that turntable one that goes around under and over the heating element. He raved av bout the thing. I thought it was a pretty ridiculous appliance since it was good for just one thing and pizza isn't high on my list. Plus they were around 40 to 50 dollars. Well saw one on clearance for 19 bucks one day. DH is always doing frozen pizza so i figured I'd spend it on him and maybe he could do his own without mess. That thing is fantastic! It makes frozen pizza taste almost as good as chain take-out. Just slap the frozen pizza on the tray and 16 minutes late you have hot pizza cooked the way you like it. You can adjust the lower and upper cooking times separately if you like crispy crust or well done topping. DH can do it and clean up after himself. No hot oven in the summer. Well spent $19.00.

My most recent good surprise is Pinata. I agonized over and researched getting a rose for a shady spot. Pinata was the only one that said "preferred" shade in the reviews. I saw the blooms at High Country Roses but was not smitten. Too small and not that gorgeous. In the end I got it anyways. The bloom I have is a greenhouse bloom since it was set in the green house but my oh my, it is gorgeous and long lasting. Here is was Sat. Aug. 31. The size was much bigger than I anticipated. More of a smaller large bloom than even a larger medium bloom. Here it is Sun. 9/1/19 Wed. 9/3/19 Yesterday Friday 9/6/19 Then today, a full week after blooming it is losing one petal. Sat. 9/7/19. I love it when a rose ages gracefully. To me the bloom is still gorgeous at the end. And lasting a full week is appealing to me also. I hope it behaves the same when it gets established. We put this rose in without much enthusiasm and much backward and sideways looking for something that I liked better and it turns out I like it quite a bit. So it is a happy surprise.

Gorgeous roses. Too bad about Colette and Laguna- they are such pretty flowers. Thanks for giving us the low-down on each one.

The lacy leaves don't look bad. I don't know what's doing it, but they look kind of pretty.

Very nice. I like a little bit of everything in the garden. Lavender Lassie, Ronald Reagan and Grand Amore really stand out for me. You're mystery rose, maybe Pop Warner??

No, it's not Sheer Bliss. I would recognize the name if I heard it. Whatever it is, it is not commonly offered today. I got it in a batch with St. Patrick (a late nineties rose).

The pest, I suspect is rose slugs (the larvae of sawtooth flies).

I got my Sheer Bliss in a 2 pack from Costco.

Since I got 2 2-packs, the others were:

St Patrick
Golden Celebration
Queen Elizabeth

We just found the paper labels for them last week.

When I've seen Sheer Bliss in gardens, it seems to have more pink suffusion rather than pink edges; and it seems to open differently from this rose. At any rate, I will continue to search through names.

Your roses are beautiful. The mystery rose looks like Princess de Monaco.

Kasie, I think you are right that it is Princess de Monaco. The fully open flower has cherry pink edges like Princess de Monaco. Thanks.

The color of the campanula is not really indigo blue, as I said, but a purplish blue. My camera shows different coloration under different light conditions.
