Gotta retire, I think

Hey folks,

I think I may have to retire from the superhots. My stomach just can't take them anymore. My mouth can tolerate the heat just fine, but starting last year, every time I eat a piece of Bhut, Fatalii chocolate hab or similar chile, I end up doubled over in pain from my stomach. Anyone know how to beat this?

Well,
I'd recommend getting a physical check-up to rule out any sort of ulcer or constriction.

I would agree, an ulcer was the first thing that sprang to mind for me as well.

What kind of pain are we talking about? Sharp shooting pain, or a general "Its like food poisoning cramps" pain, or what exactly?

Also, how long after eating the pepper does the pain begin? Is it immediately, or does it take an hour or two to kick in?

Boy this brings back memories. MY DS, now 6, once went out to play with his little toy mower. Well he comes running around the corner yelling "Mommy come quick and see what I did." He had cut over all my impatients that had grown bush size and invaded some of my yard. He thought he was helping mommy keep her flowers in their bed where they belong. Not so funny then, but sure brings a smile to my face now thinking about how proud he was for helping me. And yes you do gotta love them no matter how old!!! Conni

I love houses and getting the chance to look inside, so I kind of like House Hunters. (It's a rare treat to see any of the shows, so I haven't had the chance to get too sick of them.) The realtors can be annoying, because they often seem to know as little as the buyers. I'm often shocked at the compromises people make in their original goal, or what priorities they use in buying a house they claim they want to live in for the next 20 yrs. On one we saw when dd was in the hospital, a couple chose a house weighted heavily by the suitability of the back yard for their wedding. 1 day. 1 event. And after, like other shows, watching several episodes in a row (Is that how cable TV works?!), I had to wonder if married couples ever shop for houses. I'm a traditionalist, so was surprised to see that the majority of shows were with young boyfriend-girlfriend sets. One girlfriend intended to take both of the master bedroom walk-in closets to herself, since 'I worked hard to build my own credit and I'm putting that on the line for this house.' Oh, yeah...that relationship was going to last... Her 'beloved' was told he could keep his stuff in the closet off his basement office. HH Internat'l is too out there for me... Guess I just can't relate, as a non-traveler..and someone without millions to spend on a 2nd home. I like to imagine myself in the scenario and that will just never happen.

Hayjud, if it's going to cost us $700 a month for health insurance, then we could never retire. He can keep insurance through his company when he retires, but we don't know how much that is going to cost us. If he would only get out of this manager's job, he could stay with the same company and work 32 hrs. a week, and still be full time. I think though he wants to quit this company completely and I can't blame him. He has worked there for 35 years. He works for Kroger grocery chain as a produce manager. Our son doesn't understand why a "produce manager" job is so demanding, but I try to tell him it's the lack of help that they give him that makes it so difficult. He should have never taken this manager job because of his depression and I have always regreted that he did. I think he even regrets it now. Kroger does all this great advertising about how they help people with the food drive at Xmas, etc., yet they have reduced their employees' insurance and have practically taken away the dental coverage. We only have $1,000 a year in dental coverage and that's it. He is real bitter toward Kroger, yet he kills himself to do a good job for them. I just can't understand the logic behind this and it really gets to me sometimes. I just tell myself that he is from the "old school" of the people that still care about doing a good job. We had a wonderful vacation. I just can't believe the difference in his attitude and his behavior. We had to come back home so he could be back at work on Sunday. He won't miss a Sunday because it's all overtime. He left at 3:30 and got home at 4:30. He does this every Sunday and when he gets home, he sleeps all evening and it's just like he's not even here. I think he said 20 words to me all last night and some of the words were "are my clothes ready for in the morning?" This morning, Monday, he left at 4:30 but he never had to be at a meeting until 6:00 a.m. This meeting is at another store, so he went to his store so he could work an hour before he had to be at the meeting. This really burns me up inside that he does this, esp. when they won't give a dam about him when he retires (for that matter, they don't care now how much he kills himself to do the "perfect" job). If I say anything, he gets defensive. As for the land, if we do buy land it is only going to be one acre and no more. That's one reason why we are selling this house. We had 3.5 acres and we gave one acre to our youngest son. We still have 2.5 acres and all of it is grass and has to be cut. Personally, I am hoping we find a house already built so we don't have to worry about where we're going to live while a house is being built and storing our furniture. We've already done that once when we built this house. I really enjoyed being around my DH when he was so relaxed. He is like a different person. We worked really hard around the house for 3 days, then we took 2 days off. I look forward to more days like this, just being able to see him relax more. We don't like much more having it ready. We are having a garage sale this weekend. My future DIL and son are going to help me and what doesn't sell, goes to Salvation Army. Would it be terrible if I set a date when we will put this house on the market, so we can go ahead and get it sold?

That depends on the molding...is it attached to the cabinet and separate from the rest of the trim? If so it should match the cabinet. If, however it is at the ceiling and runs into crown around the rest of the room that's the trim color, it could match the trim. For example, my kitchen has 2 rows of crown...one at the cabinet and one at the ceiling. The cabinet one matches the cabinets, the ceiling one matches the rest of the trim in the room. But here is an example where the cabinet trim does not match the ceiling trim even though they both touch the ceiling. Fig leaf tea has helped me get back to eating pepper. It wasn't doubled over in pain from my stomach. Umm, it was lower, and heartburn to go with it.

I have Diverticulitis.

I couldn't even eat anything sprinkled black pepper! I had to quit eating out entirely. If there was a little pepper on anything, Katy bar the door!

Thanks for the ideas, folks. I don't hink that it's an ulcer because nothing else bothers me. Even cooked habs don't cause any trouble, just raw superhots. I can go as hot as a couple of tepins, but any hotter and I feel the burn within minutes. Rick hit it head on though. Funny thing is, it started last year after a bout of Bhut eating with the kids in my chile club at school. It seems to be getting worse. This might sound strange, but its almost like my stomach is producing more and more of the capsaicin receptors. Wierd. So, I guess I'll have to stick to cooking them or making sauce out of them.

Tell me more about your chile club...I am a middle school teacher and the kids are interested in my hot peppers too...what do you guys do at chile club?

He, simsedward, about chile club. It's not really a club, just a time and place where kids can challenge one another to eat hot chiles. It began in 2008 when I had a great harvest of Bhut Jolokia, cayenne, hot paper lantern, super chile, tepin and others. I brought in a basket of ripe red ones and in it was a small jar full of the tepins. I set it on my desk and during a studyhall, one kid asked about them. I described all of them and then a Chinese kid in the front row said "I bet I can eat that" referring to the tepin. I said "go ahead" and with those two words, the Chile Club was born. By the end of the day, at least 20 students came doen to try some hot stuff and we went all the way to the Bhut Jolokia (only small slivers, of course). Some people worry about lawsuits and such, but I'm not one of them. Basically, I try my best to discourage them, making it clear that they are "hotter than anything you could ever even imagine", but that just makes them want them all the more. Most importantly, I set a few rules: 1) no chile leaves the room, 2) wash hands thoroughly with soap and water. We usually unly meet during the first quarter wen the harvest is coming in. I have also found that the "members" are adventurous and willing to try other foods such as durian. It's a fun thing to do, and the kids get pretty excited about it too.
