Transplanting Clematis

bob_in_colorado

I planted some clematis plants against my deck a few years ago against a trellis. The frickers are growing up onto the deck now. They've also started to grow out and it looks like a huge bush of clematis.

They are flowering and I want to transplant them to another area at the base of my split rail fence that's lined with rabbit wire.

My plan was to cut them back so I can get to them and dig as much of the roots as I can. Anyone see problems with this?

The spots where they're going have drip so they'll get plenty of water. I was also going to mulch heavily.

Thoughts? Advice?
