Is Deadheading with Less Mess Possible

Though I've been gardening for years, I now have MANY plants that each year will need to be deadheaded in hopes of that second bloom and/or to increase the one time flowering.

As I was cleaning up today, I thought there must be a better way then trimming things up with my manual hedge trimmers and gathering up the spent items.

Should I lay plastic before I trim and scoop it up afterwards instead having it get into the mulch? Grab a bunch of spent flowers with one hand and clip with the other?

Has anyone found an easier way to clean up the area after deadheading. I have both shrubs and prolific flowering plants to deadhead, so though I like deadheading, I want an easier way to ensure I keep it all up.
