My largest small harvest this season

Hi Folks,

Unlike last season, my plants were limited this year. I've been harvesting pods here and there as they ripened over the past couple of months but nothing to fill a plate and photograph.

Anyhow, with the weather turning against me now, I pulled whatever was almost ripe to ripe a few days ago.

Middle: Chimayo. Clockwise from the 1:00 position: Chocolate Bhut Jolokia; Savinas; a couple of small Bhuts; Moruga and Butch T's; stunted Berbere's; Orange Habs and finally, my most prolific plant this year, Esox07's Naga Morich's.

Overnight today it's going to get close to freezing overnight so I pulled pods from plants destined for compost and moved a couple of others inside.

Here's a couple of shots of today's small harvest of mainly Botinecka Zuta and a few Orange Habs and Savina's.

For some reason my yellows didn't get the memo that the season is ending, they're taking their time ripening. I've moved my Yellow Bhut Jolokia and Trinidad Scorpion FG inside. I've harvested 8 or so Yellow Bhuts so far but there's still 30 odd green pods on the plant. I've got easily 200 pods on my TS FG but it's only now starting to ripen. It's a real tease!

Here's a couple of shots of the FG (not a pure Scorpion but the only variety that consistently puts out a stinger on at least 90% of its pods).

That's a nice variety - lots of colors and shapes, Bill! You sure those aren't tomatoes? ;-)

Nice pods Bill. I bet those pods will ripen if you can keep the plant warm somewhat. They're almost there!

Tom, I think that if someone is publicly selling garlic for planting purposes, it should be large... maybe not the absolute biggest of the harvest, but still very large. I can see him keeping his absolute largest to replant, of course... but the stuff I harvested here in July, even from some leftover loose runt cloves, were bigger than some I received. Therefore the thoughts that if the winning bid was more than $0.33 each, maybe they would have been bigger? These were different varieties than I bought from him last year, but last year's seemed bigger. As for the corn gluten meal, we really don't know if the weeds are annuals or perennials, they may have blown in or even survived thru finished compost. Some is crabgrass, others I've never seen before here, not that I remember anyway. I think the soil temp is warm enough for weeds to germinate still, and I couldn't get back there to weed so everything went to seed... and yanking & raking & everything probably spread seeds everywhere. So they still may germinate this year, plus next year. Also, I don't have any mulch, unless I use compost that I pay for... no grass here... maybe some leaves in another month. I personally have never mulched my garlic here. The corn gluten I think recommended app rate is around 10-20lbs per 1000 sq ft--the entire pumpkin patch is only around 250-300. You usually apply 2x per year. It's effectiveness increases each year you reapply it. I think it starts out in the 60-70% range the first app and handles about a dozen or more weeds (crabgrass, dandelion, etc.) The list is on Wikipedia I think. This should last me a pretty long time, or I can always put it on ebay in 10lb bags ;-) Plus, it acts as a fertilizer, around 9 or 10-0-0. For tomatoes, my Dr. Lyle is about done except for a few large green ones near the top, but still have many other varieties still producing. I only pulled 1 determinate plant. Next year I will devote more time & space on my own crosses/breeding. Of course I don't think I can get away with just 5! Plus you sent me 2 to grow, thanks. But I probably won't grow 12 different cherries like usual. I grew maybe 80 varieties of maters and spent sooooo much time saving seeds for ebay, and peeling & dicing tomatoes for Annie's Salsa (41 pints or so canned), that I think I only actually sat down and ate about 5 full tomatoes all year! And just 1 or 2 BLT's! We did do 8 gallons of puree with the Spremy too. Matter of fact, I STILL didn't get to save seeds from every one of the 80+ varieties this year yet! The smell of rotting split tomatoes that now look like seed "sacs" is making me sick! Today I did maybe 4 varieties of peppers--many drying in the oven to grind plus just got done preparing 15 Billy Ogden's stuffed hot peppers (mozz/parm/cream cheese/garlic/etc.) Pepper plants are still loaded--have to find more uses for them! A dairy co-op sounds great. There was an article in the New York Times on the comeback of small dairies (it focused on really high-end expensive ones). I would buy that here...actually I think it is possible to get organic unhomogenized milk but I'm not sure how local it is. I buy organic milk because I hope that kind of company treats the cows better. I wish raw milk were legal in Virginia. During summer I buy raw goat cheese on the black market if it's not sold out by the time I get there. For butter I use the spreadable butter/canola oil mix made by Country Crock. No margarine in it, just slightly more heart-healthy with the canola. I am in the process of signing up for my first community-supported-agriculture share! The most popular one in Richmond was already full, but I found a biodynamic farm that delivers here and has half-shares for $450 for 20 weeks ($22.50/week). I could easily spend that much at the farmers' markets, but I want to try the challenge of eating whatever they give me. I will grow tomatoes, cucumbers, peppers, and herbs too, but I share the small yard with my downstairs neighbor who wants to grow flowers, and we won't be transforming the whole yard, just some borders and some containers. The red rings are new, from Ball, and you can get them at Walmart, Target, Amazon, etc. They also have purple, green and blue. Here's the recipe I use. I'm not usually this prepared when I cook, but I am with jams, jellies, etc, because I always forget something if I'm not prepared. Simple Strawberry Jam About 10 ½ pint (1 cup) jars of jam 5 cups hulled mashed strawberries 7 cups sugar 4 tablespoons fresh lemon juice 1 49g package powdered fruit pectin, or 6 T of pectin from large container ½ tsp butter (optional, supposed to keep the foam down) Fill large hot water bath canner (or pot) with water and heat to boil. Place 8 10 10 8-ounce canning jars, cover with water and simmer while preparing the fruit. Simmer center lids in separate saucepan full of water. Meanwhile: Set out all the ingredients and equipment before you start. Hull and crush whole strawberries (I cut the really big ones in half) and measure 1 cup at a time, draining a lot of the juice. I use a flat bottom bowl and crush them with a potato masher. I put them, one cup at a time, into the cooking pot. Place mashed strawberries and lemon juice in another large pot. Stir in pectin until dissolved. Bring strawberries to a strong boil. Add butter Add sugar all at once (you MUST measure beforehand because you will lose count), return mixture to a full (violent) boil that can’t be stirred down. Boil hard for 1 minute 15 seconds. Skim foam off the top. Remove one jar at a time from the simmering water. Pour water back into the pot. Using a wide-mouth funnel, fill each jar with jam, being careful to keep the liquid/fruit ratio consistent. Fill jars so that they have 1/4-inch of space at the top. Wipe rim of jar with a wet cloth to remove any residue or stickiness. Remove lid from simmering water and position it on top. Put screw bands on jars, finger tighten. Repeat with all jars and lower the jars into the water in or on a canning rack of some kind. Place lid on canner, bring water back to a full boil. Boil hard for 10. Remove jars from water using a jar lifter, and allow them to sit undisturbed for 24 hours. Listen for that really satisfying pop. After 24 hours, remove screw bands and check the seal of the jars. Center lids should have no give whatsoever. If any seals are compromised, store those jars in the fridge. A few variations from Ball. Vanilla Strawberry Jam: Add half a vanilla bean, split in half lengthwise, to the crushed strawberries. Cook as directed and remove vanilla bean before ladling jam into jars. The resulting jam will be enhanced with subtle yet distinct vanilla overtones. Strawberry Balsamic Jam: Reduce the lemon juice to 1 tbsp and add 3 tbsp good-quality balsamic vinegar. Balsamic vinegar accents the strawberry flavor and gives the jam a robust taste. Lemony Strawberry Jam: Add the grated zest of 1 large lemon to the crushed strawberries. Peppered Strawberry Jam: Stir 1/2 tsp freshly ground black pepper into the cooked jam just before ladling it into the jars. Pepper accents and compliments strawberries' sweet flavor. Be sure to use freshly ground pepper, which delivers a fresher-quality flavor. (This is modified from Pioneer Woman. She has some good recipes, but ...........)

great job on the harvest bill and thanks for resending me that recipe i would be interested in some of those Trinidad Scorpion FG seed if you have any to spare i have some things for trade if your looking for any seed .Were looking at some bad weather to i will be doing a harvest tomorrow then getting ready for the battle looks like next 4 days will be rough 36 32 32& possible snow 30

Bill - Great photo of your pickings. I pulled the plug this past week with pulling the last of my plants on Saturday (got down to low 30's). Was great-full for a longer season at the end here in MN compared to most years.

The FG looks great. I've not grown any type of Scorpions yet, so may have to try a scorpion or two.

I've not seen/nor tried a 'Botinecka Zuta' before, can you enlighten us about them. I like that they look like small toms.

Sorry to hear you had to cut back this year. Does that mean no Grim Reaper 2013?

I sure hope your pepper prospects work out for the 2014 season.

Nice harvest, Bill. Very pretty variety. I'm still spending about a half day every week stemming and seeding. Supposed to get some temps in the mid 30s in southern CT this week though. As usual, I'm going to have to finish ripening my Manzanos inside this year.

Sandy, the Botinecka Zuta is a Balkan heirloom pepper. It's a Hungarian cheese type variety like the Alma. Both are used to make a sweet paprika. It has a thick flesh with a firm crunch and no heat. I've read they also make a mice stuffing pepper.

I can't find your address either. Send it to me and I'll forward some seeds and a couple of Scorpion varieties for you to try.

Yep, some cool looking peppers there Bill. I pulled my peppers last week. The weather held out longer than I expected but now we are in the 40's for highs and 20's for lows with a sudden end to the Indian Summer. I hate to say it but I threw out a whole lot of super hots. I grew one Giant Ghost and it had 4-5 dozen pods on it and nearly half were nice and red when I pulled it. My Carolina Reaper started slow this year but put out a ton of nice pods. I tossed that with 70+ pods on it and easily half were ripe red. My Butch-T grew very vigourously but only put out about a dozen pods and I only got two of them to ripen before the end of the season. I know, heresy in tossing perfectly good, ripe peppers, but I just have no real use for the super hots. I just grew them for the novelty, I guess. I would have gladly given them away but I don't know anyone that was willing to take them...hahaha. I guess I live too far from the Mexican border or something.

That's a decent harvest, alright!
Those Yellow Bhuts don't get the message...they take their sweet time. I recall harvesting the last of 'em in December (in the cold-frame). Probably doin' the same this season.

Are u moving? I didn't know! Well Hon, I have given up on the Habanero plants...they got as far as flowering but the weather is just going to cool down too much for them to produce anything now... The same with my Trinidad S. Those definitely need to be started early and I just did not have enough time. I might get that one Alma red but I don't know about the others! I am going to see if I can bring my black Cubans, black pearls, Takanosume and a couple other plants indoors and see if I can get them to finish inside then I think I am going to totally start all over again next season. Totally new plants, etc. unless JJ wants to keep a plant or two to take care of!! So I will have to check around for some of the seeds I need. And I DEFINITELY will get started early this year!! Oh by the way would you happen to have those two recipes you sent me last year? One was the Carribean BBQ sauce the other was a sauce or salsa that used part of a 7 pot pepper. I lost it when we moved! Thanks Bill!!

Bill. If you have an extra few of those Botinecka seeds could you float a few down my way. There heat is about my speed... Nil!!! JJ and D ( my second son-only 13 months between them) are the ones into the Superhots now!!! I thought eating the Superhots would mess with (not to be gross about this) mucous production and lord knows what with insulin, pancreas, etc. so we really did not want D eating them at first . He has Cystic Fibrosis and asthma and we didn't want him to trigger anything bad . However, last year he started eating some hot peppers and he seems to be willing to try more and more - so far with no side effect so ...he's a teen what can I do?! We'll let me finish my emails!!!! Still a nice harvest. Here on the west of Toronto. I got a wopping 3 orange habs, a handfull of thai's and maybe 6 jalepenos.

I pulled all the green off a couple of nights ago as we were starting to have overnight frost. Put them all in my dehydrator to grind for my shaker.
Hope we have better weather for the pepper season next year.
