I don't know about the rest of you folks on this forum but I seem to end up being the 'unwanted chile' adoption agency around here. For some reason, a lot of people plant all of these various peppers and then don't do anything with them. Now don't get me wrong, I don't mind receiving free pods and have actually found some odd species doing so. Which brings me to my next point...

Any guesses on this one? Someone said it COULD be a Naga Jolokia but I kind of doubt it.

Yeah, after a taste test (with full beer waiting in the wings) I will have to say there is NO WAY that is a Naga Jolokia. They maybe look a little similar but the heat was about the same level as a cayenne.

Not just master gardeners but even local people interested in your plants would be willing to come and dig some up. Just be aware they'll probably try to be careful but you never know what could happen around the other plants, so while they are in your garden, accidents could happen to other plants. The other case is that, every now and then, try as you might, you just can't give the plants away. In that case, I'll have to sadly throw them out with the trash or at least, maybe boil or stew them in some way to kill them (don't want their bulbs or runners or whatever continuing to grow), then add it to the compost pile.

I wasn't much enamoured with singles but i planted dainty bess, goldenwings, sparrieshoop together on a whim. I have 3 db,1 sparrieshoop, 3 goldenwings(one was mistake). now i couldn't b without them. db is the only ht i have (is she really a ht?) that has eliminated any predjudice i had before. i am thinking about getting white wings which is a sport of db, not golden wings. they have done rather well in all the heat and humidity here.

I am about to compost my Pineapple Upsidedown Cake. Every spring it gets bigger and bigger and shows all kinds of promiss, the it just seems to go limp. By the end of June it looks like it should be September if I gaged the seasons on PUSDC. Besides, even using its acronym it has more letters than June. I will be a defender of Ginko Craig. I have told this story in this forum often. So I will make it short. You can take GC, cut it up into single eye divisions and pot them, plant them the next spring, and the next year have a very nice compact variegated green with white margin, medium-small hosta that flowers profusely. How can one hate a hosta like that. I moved just one of about 50 I had propogated from 5 fall sale purchases I had in Arkansas to IL and it is lovely and maintains itself very nicely. Les

Mike, you really don't need to dig up much of the rootball if you want to try the mulch-in-a-plastic-trashbag method of storing over winter. The main woody roots will be fine and most of the feeder roots you lose by shaking off the soil will most likely die off during winter anyway, to be quickly replaced in spring. I shook about 75% of the soil off mine (only 3+ year-old seedlings and established rooted plants, no newly rooted!) and put about 8 in one bag, tied it tight and just left it in a trash can with rags in the bottom. A couple of the big boys I just pulled out of the ground without even digging and put into pots with some soil or mulch. If you cover the remaining roots in the bag with mulch you probably don't even need to add any water over winter. I used no mulch so I added just a half cup twice over winter. Come April when I checked inside the bottom of the bag there were new feeder roots growing in the little remaining soil at the bottom. Pretty amazing, really!

Looks very much like my Siling Labuyo (Philipino hot). They tend to be a bit more juicy and fruity than cayenne (cayenne seem to be all skin and no meat, IMO) and about like a tabasco. but a little sharper kick in the tonsils.

I'd like to adopt some unwanted chile pods!! This summer has been a series of experiments on different uses for spicy chiles, but people want me to give THEM chiles vs. giving ME chiles... :-(

I'm leaning towards Thai. The heat is about around cayenne level. Nice flavor.

I will have to say I'm a lucky guy. When friends and my wife's coworkers grow peppers and don't use them, guess who ends up with them. Works out well for me :)
