Lighting for potted pepper plants, wintered inside.

Ok, I have potted Guam boonie peppers, and I just took my plants inside. They were behaving badly after outdoor temperatures dropped below 40 degrees F and they didn't recover until the outside temperature reached 50 degrees. So inside they went.

Right now they're by the French doors downstairs. I've been turning on the lights near them (curly florescents you use in incandescent sockets) with the idea that more lumens are better than fewer lumens. So, some questions..

1. Are those curly florescents adequate to keep inside plants alive? If not, what kind of lighting is good? How much wattage? How much light?

2. Better to keep the French doors unshaded? My wife is beginning to worry about privacy. If we could, she'd shade the doors and use inside lighting for the plants.

Any suggestions appreciated.
