Hybrid Pimpinellifolia # 2: 'Fruhlingsgold'

Long before the House of Kordes pulled the scentless Rosa kordesii out of its breeding tanks and became fixated with it, they experimented with Rosa pimpinellifolia as a parent for shrub roses. These were hybridized with hybrid tea roses. The result were hardy, large-flowered roses with an arching habit called the 'Fruhlings' ('Spring' auf Deutsch) roses.

I have had 'Fruhlingsgold' for many years now, a gift from Alice in rec.gardens.roses. Its yellow buds open into magnolia-like flowers. They last but two days for me. It's an early bloomer. Good scent and large ruby-black hips each fall. Minor damage to the canes tips in an average winter.

(Alice, If you're still on-line -- thank you)

As the long buds scroll open, there may be the barest wash of pink about the petals.

The scent is good in the morning. I'm reminded of a sweeter 'Harison's Yellow' which is also blooming right now. This is a graceful shrub.
