Bhut Jolokia Vs. Jaga Jolokia.. Same thing or different peppers?

Pepper Heads,

Most places I read about the Bhut Jolokia name the Naga Jolokia as the same pepper. In other places I've read that the Naga jolokia is of a different variety (dont have the sources to list at the moment). Can someone clarify?

A couple of years ago there was rampant confusion out there regarding "the hottest pepper". Names such as Bhut Jolokia, Dorset Naga and Naga Jolokia seemed to be used interchangeably. Today, the Jolokias go by MANY different names including Nagahari, Bhut Jolokia, Bih Jolokia, Borbih, Raja Mircha, Raja Chilli, Mirch, Mircha, Naga Moresh, Naga Morich, Tezpur, and Dorset Naga.

It hasnÂt helped that some vendors have applied their own name to the Jolokia varieties (i.e. Dorset Naga).

Another confusing issue was/is a number of either ignorant or in some cases, fraudulent vendors who sell/sold the less hot C. frutescens Naga Jolokia seed under the banner Worlds Hottest, thus propagating the general publics confusion.

The true (if you will) super hot Jolokias are of the species C. chinense. C. frutescens varieties are more akin to Thai, Tabasco, etc. peppers. I have heard there is also a C. annuum version but know nothing about it.

That is for sure not a Bhut Plus side is you gained working experience thru all this Bhuts are an OK strain to work with,hardly at the top of the Super ranks but still respectable heat. There are many other strains out here that will put even the best of bhut strains to same at the SHU level. Someone mentioned it back up the thread somewhere and it is very much incorrect,for novice eaters "its good enough",but both the heat and flavor are comparatively lacking compared to many other super strains currently available. I agree, Capo! Well said. My friends and I joke about the flavors of these superhots....we try to taste/analyze the flavor of the fresh peppers in the first 10 - 30 seconds of chewing the pod...because, invariably, that heat will begin to overwhelm. That incredible aroma, however, does tend to fill the sinuses and linger despite the onset of the heat. I think the Naga Dorset is probably a more versatile pepper, although that's entirely subjective. I actually prefer the lighter, brighter, more citrusy taste and aroma of the Bhut, as opposed to what I considered the slightly heavier, more Hab-like flavor of the Dorset. However, that heavier flavor seemed to work well with more dishes. Entirely subjective, of course! Josh

hey juicy1 thanks for your kind words, they sound like music to my soul. sorry to hear about your peppers although it sounds good that they're still setting flowers and the heat has been less intense. i read that stress is a major cause for flowers not setting. however figuring out the trigger has got to be "the" question. what are the others saying. i went through the spider mite/ aphid/ green lacewing larvae thing which helped significantly. then i later relocated most of my plants in spots where they got more afternoon shade with more frequent watering and misting which also helped. it'll be interesting to hear what the trigger is for your bhut jolokia. do you have a soil kit. perhaps you can check your soil to see what nutrient your plant maybe lacking. i believe they sell them in walmart/lowes or home depot. so stay encouraged juicy1, it's not over yet. in the meantime, how about rick in va jolokia. isn't it awesome. it's inspiring just to see. rick in va, if there's yellow it must be just a hint. looks more like a lighter shade of orange where the last of the development to a deeper orange to red is occuring. man are those pods fierce. you could almost feel the heat coming of those things. what do you think juicy1. and struwwelpeter, is it the light or are some of your pods red. nice...don't pick them. lol. hey i just noticed something, the pods on both plants are ripening from the bottom up. that's different from my other pepper plants which ripened randomly somewhere around the middle. and my chocolate bhut which looks more hab (my cross)started ripening mostly from the bottom. could it be the begining of something. hey guys, how difficult is it to cross pollinated. like how many generations of plants does it take. did anyone see that post on my chocolate jolokia or hab post by a blogger cmpman...he posted a picture of a chocolate jolokia that looks like a beautiful, chocolate, tortured soul with a good length...lol. my god, i think i'm getting hooked on these things. hey juicy1, tell me i'm over the top. :) let my know what happens with your peppers. if i can maintain my plants to the stage of maturity, i'll send you some peppers. i feel another blog title coming up... :) thanks everyone for all your help. hope every signed up for the pepper trade. i'm excited. it'll be my first one.

With all due respect to DMForcier, we all have different taste buds, I get the heat a lot sooner. In fact, I find drying pods intensifies the heat. In my mind, strictly from "my" experience, if you didn't go OH CRAP!!! 2-3 seconds after tasting then; (a) your taste buds are numb; (b) you've developed a tolerance to Capsicum; (c) you're dead and just don't know it yet or (d) you're not tasting a dried Bhut. Typically the Bhuts are the largest length and width wise of the Jolokia peppers, with the Dorsets being the shortest and the ones with the smoothest skin out of all of them.

There is a Naga Jolokia PC1, but it is a frutescens and isn't that hot. People call the Bhut , Bih , Dorset and Naga Morich, Naga jolokia sometimes as a generic term but they are all different. Close, but different.

Interesting. I did find the Dorset smaller and smoother than the Bhut and Bih. I really didn't notice any difference between the Bhut and Bih. I've read that they are basically the same genetically and from the same Assam region. Thanks for clearing up my doubts... I thought I started the Dorset from a seed that was genetically confused ;-) This was my first year successfully growing out all three.

chililover, the PC1 is the "Thai" type that grows upright and doesn't have much flavor, right? I've seen the PC1 mentioned elsewhere but was never sure what it was exactly.

Ya the Pc1 is the upright thai type. Bih should be smoother and not as knarly. More like a Morich. Check out Neil's bih vid on youtube.

Since were on the topic of Jolokia peppers... I'm not a geneticist but I give it my best shot after a few pints of wobbly pop. Here's an interesting read I found a couple of years ago.

Versions I grew in 2007

I couldn't tell a great deal of difference between the various Bhuts and Nagas. They were all too hot for me. It should also be noted that all peppers have pod variation ( even on a single plant) so these my not match the versions you grow.
