Half of Bell Plant turned Hot

Don't hate me,but I'm not a fan of hot peppers. The only reason I planted one jalapeno was for some recipes that call for a bit of heat. I freeze the peppers and use them throughout the year.
Anyways, I know the "experts" say this can't happen, but my bell plant about 4 ft. away is now producing half hot bells and half regular bells. The peppers facing the jalapeno have turned hot, and the bells on the other side are normal. There's even a tomato plant in between. Hmmmm,,,so what will become of the tomatoes?
