Name That Rose!

Can you please help me identify this rose?

Hi,

At the time I can't offer you a lot of info because my rose isn't blooming at the moment but I do have some pics from last year. It is a climbing rose that blooms once with soft pink roses which are in clusters and has a faint fragrance to it. It is a fast climber. My husband dug me a start of this rose a few years ago at an old home site in the woods.

Any help you can give me to point me in the right direction will be greatly appreciated. ;-)

Well, if it's a very vigorous, once-blooming climber that roots easily from suckers, I would guess that it's one of the wichurana ramblers like Dorothy Perkins and her relatives. It's difficult to tell any detail from the photo, though. DP and the other wich. rambler hybrids from the late 1800s and early 1900s are commonly seen at old homesites and along roadsides.

Hi GardnerPhotographer- Your flowers are very pretty, but I don't know what they are. It is very difficult for even rose experts (and I'm not one of those!) to say what you have there just from pictures of the blooms. To aid with an ID, it would be helpful if you could post additional photos of the plant, especially showing leaves, buds, new growth, stems, prickles- anything that might help someone distinguish your rose from others that might have a similar flower. Also, if you can say something about how often the plants bloom, if the flowers are fragrant, or anything else that you've noticed that strikes you as an identifying characteristic. You may also want to post your additional photos to the Roses forum since it gets more traffic than the Rose ID forum. Good luck, Virginia

Hi Susan. I think the odds are that you have 'Dr. W. van Fleet', a Wichurana climber bred here in the USA and introduced in 1910. I can see that the foliage is quite glossy, and the bloom style/color is right for this rose, but I don't see its thorns: there are likely a modest number of hooked thorns, probably brown in color, yes? I expect the blooms have a somewhat delicate fragrance reminiscent of green Apples, is that right? Your description suggests that it flowers only once, in early Summer, which would make this 'Dr. W. van Fleet'. If it has the ability to rebloom throughout the growing season, then it would be the sport of 'Dr. W. van Fleet' called 'New Dawn', which is far more popular because of its ability to bloom more than once a year. I grew both Pretty Lady Rose (died this winter), plus Pink Peace. It looks like Pink Peace for me. Pretty Lady Rose has VERY GLOSSY foliage, but Pink Peace has dull & and dark-green foliage like the pic.

This is a hardy, climbing rose that usually has blooms on it with the exception of a few winter months.
Was told by my neighbor that the Mother of the previous house owner brought the rose over from Europe. It is fragrant, has thorns, climbs, and I have propogated about 25 stems. Already transplanted and they are blooming as well. Any guesses as to the name of this rose?
