Name That Rose!

Do you recognize this rose?

Hi,

Does this look like Chrysler Imperial?

I got this bareroot rose from Home Depot earlier this year that was **supposed** to be Reine Des Violettes.

It seems to be a fast grower and the blooms are bright red(but not really a true red) with white streaks inside that is hard to tell from the pictures.

I am really leaning towards CI on this one(esp. after comparing pictures on HMF).

Please let me know what you think.

Also, does it look like it may be the climbing version?

It doesn't look like my CI..bloom is not full enough and shape is wrong..I don't know what it is, though.

I have a mystery rose that looks alot like that one. The color is the same as mine and it has long stems, those pale green leaves and isn't very thorny like Chrysler Imperial is. I saw the roses at Home Depot this year and noticed they had Chrysler Imperial and Christian Dior reds for sale. I bought my rose at Wal-Mart and it was supposed to be a Mr. Lincoln but I bought two and they look different. One was a Mr. Lincoln but the other looked like the one in your picture. They had Olympiad and Christian Dior roses as well as Mr. Lincolns. Makes me wonder if it might be Christian Dior.
Can anyone tell by looking at your picture?

It is a puzzlement...

I know it's not Mme. Antoine Mari because I grow that one, but thank you. I was wrong about the size of the plant - I just took a really good look at it and it has grown this Spring - it's canes are closer to 5' long right now, and are being pulled over by the blooms. I saw Lance's description of Marchioness of Londonderry's growth on another thread, and I'm beginning to wonder if that's who this actually is. Lance, would you be interested in stopping by and taking a look? Since you grow MoL in my area, I'd especially value your in-person opinion.

"Cabbage rose" was first used to describe the Centifolias, then later the term was applied to some Hybrid Perpetuals which had a similar flower form. I think the term continued to be used (if rather incorrectly) to describe almost any many-petaled rose with the old flower shape (as opposed to the high-centered shape epitomized by Hybrid Teas and some of the later old Teas). If you saw flowers that late in the season, it's not a Centifolia -- but that's apparent by looking at the pics, anyway. To my eye, it looks rather Tea-ish, which could mean it's actually a Tea, or a Hybrid Perpetual (or Bourbon) with Tea breeding, or an early Hybrid Tea. I'm hoping that more Tea experts from CA will chime in with stronger opinions. :-) ~Christopher

I've been looking at Scarlet Meidiland, and while the blooms are similar, the sprays appear to be more open on Scarlet Meidiland... and then there's the size issue - this monster of mine wants to be a whole lot bigger that the descriptions of Scarlet Meidiland I've just been reading. Is this a situation like so many of the Austins, where they routinely grow much larger than the descriptions? Maybe mine's a Scarlet Meidiland on sterioids? :-)

dirt is what you have all over you.. after you play in the soil ... but what you have in that pot.. is potting media ... potting medium ... once i learned to differentiate between the 3.. all of a sudden.. so many variables became clear .... ill step off my soapbox now.. lol ... to avoid this type of thing.. i usually sterilize my media ... before use ... kill all those rogue seeds and bugs if any ... opps.. it was 2 levels.. now im off it .... lol ... ken ps: whatever it is.. it should probably be removed from the rose ...
