Lav Crystal & Lav Jewel at Sequoia Nursery

I went by the nursery today and picked up probably my last three roses from them. They still have plenty of all variety roses to sell, including OGR's.

I did see a couple of flats of Starina's as I cruised the aisles looking for minis, FYI.

I saw that they had about 7 of the 6" pots of Lavender Crystals left. This is about the only place I know sells them. I have no idea if they'll be available from Texas A&M. Reposting this year's pic of them.

They also have a couple of flats of plants of Lavender Jewel. This is a beautiful rose. It ended last year for me at 28"tallx43"wide. These pics were some of the best I've taken of it and they're from last Sept when it was still running 100's and high 90's.

If you like these shades I wouldn't pass this up, these are terrific roses.

I saw they had about a dozen or so of Tangerine Jewel left, BTW.

All the roses looked really great and I enjoyed seeing most of them in bloom. I will really miss this nursery. It's pretty warm today and Mr. Moore was out there working this afternoon.

Ooooohhh Leslie, I would love to have both of them. I might just break down and order them. Plus one more tangerine jewel. I got one from them last year and loved its pretty little bloom. The color on it is gorgeous too. Judy

Ahaa! I have Lavender Jewel. My friend gifted it to me in a beautiful large pot with a big lilac bow several years ago, and we have enjoyed it in a regular rose bed. I have now transplanted it and actually split it up, so have more plants in to a new Mini Garden - Now how do you like those apples! heehee!

I am happy to see that it is one you enjoy also! Lavender Crystal looks very pretty too.

I just noticed your rose tags also. They look similar to a bunch, 150, I just purchased. Did you use the carbon pencil? That is what I bought for labelling. I am not sure how it will stand up yet. Or did you use somethig else? If so, what? Would very much appreciate your response on this.

Rosefolly ~ sorry not to have something definative for you. My first guess is 'City Lights'. Only a side-by-side comparison could verify. If it reblooms. 'Cycles' and 'Suky' are possibbilities. They both have 'Victoria Falls' in their breeding and some years VF has been a reblooming fool. Other years, not. 'Batik' is not reverting --- broken color iris often have unstable genes. You love the same colors as I. Beardeds bloom here before the roses - drat! I also like those whose falls drape rather than being held out horizontally. And I prefer beardeds around 35 inches - don't have space for the 40 inchers. There are some reliable good rebloomers and some not so hot. Much depends on weather conditions. Often they don't achieve the large, ruffled, showy bloom if that is important to you. Another thing I've learned -- if an iris hasn't won an HM I now steer clear (unless it's foreign, a Blyth, Anfosso, Bianco, etc.) If it's won an AM and I like it in several pictures (and they match written description) I'm safe. One exception was Kentucky Woman - no soul. And I don't hesitate with the HM winners if I've seen the true color -- buds often spaced badly, poor branching, etc., so can't make it to the AM level. But many charm me more than Dykes' winners. Skating Party is probably my favorite pure white -- lovely. And I don't much care for whites. Leda's Lover is a good ceamy white. And I like Elizabeth Poldark even tho the standards spread wide as the bloom ages - it works with this iris (think Leda was a parent). If you like SA (space agers) Mesmerizer can be stunning. "Blues" -- Abiqua Falls, Color Me Blue, Delta Blues, Navajo Jewel, Oregon Skies, and one of my old favorites Babbling Brook. Mind you, no delphinium blue exists. Lavender -- Mary Francis (love, orchid lav.), Bubbling Over is excellent and plays well with other colors. Pinks -- Chanteuse, Lace Artistry (love, peach influence), Vanity. Would love to see Coming Up Roses. Like Femme Fatale a lot because it's so frothy. A dark horse by my favorite hybridizer (Hager) is Foolish Fancy -- pictures don't do it justice -- rose influenced blue -- afternoon shade helps maintain the color. Peachy Pink -- Alice Goodman, Beverly Sills still pleases. Would love to see Buisson de Roses. Peach -- Status Seeker I go back to again and again. Maybe it's because the orange sherbet with pink influence in the standards is so clear and clean. Nice bloom form. Those are the pastel solids (selfs) I treasure. Non-Selfs worth noting: Bollywood was love at first sight - the right shade of soft yellow over lavender with the right amount of ruffling. Gypsy Woman has excellent color balance of soft yellow over a light fall edged by pronounced violet. Jennifer Rebecca is an oldie rebloomer loved by many, pink-lav blend (have never seen in person). Sweet Musette is drool worthy - peach over lav. pink blend.

Hi Gabby, besides HMF's description, Sequoia's own website or catalog doesn't note this isn't a mini. I bought this last year thinking it was. I added a link for you with the best info I could find on this rose, excellent info, BTW:) I have quite a few oranges and blends, I love mauves and lavenders and these come in next as favorites. When I was looking over the all the roses last year at the nursery I did a double take when I saw this rose, it only had 8 petals last year:) I went back and smelled it this morning, I have too much of a head cold still to tell. It just has a very pleasing fragrance, not really strong but definitely there. I went over to Angel Face and that's got quite a few blooms now, that one smells "fruitier" than Tangerine Jewel does to me:) Here is a link that might be useful: Tangerine Jewel

Dear Lynn and Dianne, I had just written you a long post in answer to yours and at the last few words my system crashed. More briefly now I have cancelled Darcey Bussell and ordered Love Song since the lady at Chamblee's confirmed that for her, in Texas, DB was always more reddish and LS always stayed purplish, although I suppose it's really more in the mauve range. She also thought that LS was prettier than Blue For You when I asked her opinion. Thanks to your last two posts I now feel quite sure that I've made the right decision. I had already ordered DB before I began this thread about purple roses and was just going to add a purple, but if DB is reddish I know I wouldn't have been happy and it would have been a waste of money. Diane, I'm really amazed at your Love Song's resistance to the heat, and that makes me even more excited about getting one, since heat I've got. Twilight Zone is beautiful and I would have considered it but Chamblee's doesn't offer it. Maybe one to consider further down the road. Thanks again for taking so much time to assist me.

Thanks Judy, I believe Lavender Crystal ended last year at 24"Tx33"wide. I think Sequoia says this is a 12-18"T rose. Lavender Jewel also said 12-18"T and again it ended the year at 28"Tx43"W. LJ loves the heat and sun, is a self cleaning rose. LC likes the sun too but, I wish I had put it in a shadier place for late afternoons. The petals on that one do brown when it gets really hot. Tangerine Jewel I kept pruning for shape last year keeping it shorter and I believe it'll get to 3'T this year or larger by next when it's fully mature at 3 years old.

Hi Pauline, I remembered you had Lavender Jewel from last year. Yes I use a carbon pencil on the tags. Only place I had a problem with was a couple of roses I had to spray last year. Apparently the tag was hit with it too and discolored the aluminum and made the writing faint. I had to repencil those in. Otherwise it holds up fine. I do overhead sprinkling so with that and the rain they're fine.

Bgrose, it is too bad the nursery is closing, I'm going to miss it. It's been around for so long, I drive past it several times a week running the frontage roads here.

The couple of roses I listed are not the only ones they have though, I just thought I'd mention the lavender ones for those who like lavenders. They still have quite a selection of roses available. The tables and greenhouses are still pretty full.

Thanks Kate, Lavender Crystal can change colors slightly with the temps, sometimes it's more mauve. Sometimes more lavender and blue:)

Heard Mr. Moore's collection is going to Nor'East, don't know what it means about Texas A&M.
