Outside? No. Inside, most certainly. If they're not too big (or you have a roll-around cart in the garage) you can shlep them inside for cold nights, then back out for the sun.

if it doesn't get below 50 you have nothing to worry about. plants slow down as it gets colder, but it would take a frost to actually kill them.

I may have been slightly (or seriously?) mistaken regarding lows not hitting below 50, considering I've had a morning or two recently where it was 58 this past week....which made me actually look up our average lows.

I lived here for a year and a half about 8 years ago and I could've sworn it never got that cold. But that was also the only 1.5 years where I didn't have plant anything outside and only had a few houseplants....so maybe it's just that I didn't care and I wasn't cold when I did step outside. Who knows?!

According to the weather forecast, and we can take that with many, many grains of salt, it's supposed to dip below 50s in the middle of October.

In any case, regarding those four seeds -- I think a snail ate two and I sort of killed two by being absentminded. I was fertilizing two pots nearby and just kind of went through all of the planters....totally not realizing that the pepper seedlings were between them. The next morning, 2/4 were kaput. Like limp, face-down in the dirt kind of kaput. I flushed them for days to no avail.

The two that did okay were eventually chomped down by what I presume was the snail that also ate all of my brussels sprouts and cabbage. (Found it while it was dining on the cabbage...chucked it into the lake.)

But I'm getting really impatient and want to start the pepper seeds. Like, NOW. LOL I want to try a few seeds of Datil and Takanotsume, along with some pepper seeds from an unknown variety I planted before. The remainder can wait until the non-crazy times to start peppers.

I figure I'll plant a few each and see what comes up. No harm in growing out one of each kind for five months and seeing how they do in the house. I don't have that many varieties so moving around 3-4 plants in the house shouldn't be that big of a deal -- between the east window which is super bright during the morning to 1pm, and the west window, which goes nuts from about 3pm to sundown.

At least indoors, whatever snail friends the one in the lake had won't be able to get to them until next year. :) I'd much rather I kill them myself than having them killed!
