Too Much Nitrogen

A frequent piece of advice on this forum as well as other vegetable forums is, "Too much nitrogen will cause the plant to focus its energy on the leaves/stem growth instead of the fruit."

How does this manifest itself? Does it result in sparse blossoming? Do the blossoms fail to set pods? Or what?

My plants are large, well branched and have lots of blossoms. Will nitrogen fertilizer help or hurt those blossoms to produce pods, and large pods, now that the blossoms are present and being pollinated? After pods are set, how will their growth be affected by application of nitrogen?

Lots of questions, eh?

Jim
