Comments (7)Yeah didn't know that when I bought them on impulse. Saw 'em at Home Depot and was like, "Yeah, I'd like some of those." Been working down the row, planting the tomatoes, peppers, etc. Doesn't help that everything is clay! (See pic: http://forums.gardenweb.com/forums/load/tomato/msg061246098308.html?15 ). I've just been winging this whole thing. I'm only planting one. Got a mound 4in high and about 3ft wide with a lot of manure worked in and about 2 shovel-fulls of Miracle Gro garden soil. I've read variously to fertilize because they are heavy feeders and others that say don't fertilize a lot if at all (I forget why not), so I'm taking a middle road (I know that's a logical fallacy, the middle road is not necessarily the truth, but it seems like a good compromise is this case). Wondering if I should peel away as much of the peat pot as I can (after soaking it ofc) since peat is very acidic; I dunno about peat pots though. The last tomato I planted though had a lot of roots growing through the peat pot, guessing it probably true for these guys....See Morebitter pit, black spot or brown spot? - pomme
Comments (3)Agreed on sooty blotch, the dark sunken spot with the black center doesn't look like scab to me (at least not the way I normally see it present) It does look just like a type of rot we often get on our honeycrisps during wet years; but that normally shows up much later in the season....close to harvest. I don't know the name for it, but generally the apples are still harvestable and we just cut out that section. It usually has well defined edges and a narrowing cone of mushy rotten apple extending down from the surface. My experience with bitter pit is a tan "corky" area under the dimple in the skin, and a Spartan says it gets worse during storage....See MoreBlack vinegar
Comments (19)The Chinkiang vinegar that trailrunner recommends sounds good, if you like sweet vinegars, and Ming Tsai also recommends it, but he sells a different brand on his web site. I'm going to look for it myself because I did not buy every brand that I found at 99 Ranch. The Plum Blossom brand from Super 88 Market (wherever that is) is only 99 cents for a huge 21 oz. bottle - certainly cheap enough to try even if you end up not liking it. Sorry, Eileen, but I had only had Japanese black vinegar when I wrote about it before, and I was unaware of the great variations in the Chinese versions! I've been using Oyster Sauce when I want something sweet and syrupy for a Chinese sauce, but it will be interesting to try a sweet Chinese black vinegar. Comments (1)There are various metabolic fruit abnormalities caused by cold (or hot) temps during early development of the new ovary. I would suspect that is what you are experiencing. However, during that same time period insect damage to the ovary (flower stage) can also cause abnormal fruit. I've seen severe fruit deformaties caused by Broad Mites, tiny insects that feed on the flowers. Usually the scars resulting from Broad Mite feeding are more noticable at the stem end of the fruit. Since Aphid feeding is usually along the tender stem I would not readily blame them for the damage you are showing. At any rate the damage was done weeks ago and there is little to do at this time to reverse the damage....See Moretulipsmiles
