Name That Rose!

Please help identify this rose!

We moved into this house in November there is a rose bush in the backyard. This house has been empty for about two years before we moved in. I don't know how long this rose bush has been here; maybe since the house has (the house is about 20 years old).

I am brand new to gardening and so need lots of help & advice!

If anyone can help me identify what kind of rose this is I would really appreciate it!

I have lots of pics if needed.

As a rosebud the petals were very dark red. As it blossoms it has turned to a medium to lighter red, with a vibrant pink coloring in the inner petals. I know it's not a tea rose, because the shape is different. It is growing on an overgrown, needing to be pruned, rose shrub/bush.

The leaves are light to medium green at places. There are lots of thorns which are very stiff and sharp (ouch!)

The bloom is small to medium.

There is a fragrance when I smell it. I think it is beautiful. I am not an expert though on how strong or what type. It's more of a lighter, rosy type fragrance - not musky.

Any ideas what type of rose this could be?

Probably Dr. Huey. It is probably the rootstock of a previous grafted rose, where everything from the graft up died and the rootstock took over. Very common all over California. Dr. Huey is a once bloomer -- that is, once it blooms in the spring, it is done for the year until next spring.

You're welcome, Carol. Check the foliage, wood, prickles and scent of newly opened blooms. Weather, fertilizer, moisture levels and climate can affect bloom shape, but the coloring of the blooms appear very similar to me between the two. Are there other darker mauve HTs you've bought, or is Rothschild the darker one that's followed you home? Rothschild is quite fragrant, or was here. It always appeared to me that none of the major US producers picked it up because they had Silk Hat in the pipeline. In my garden and to my taste, Rothschild was the superior plant and bloom, but it boils down to economics. Had they pushed Rothschild, they would have owed Meilland the royalties. Childscapes, on this forum you can start your own separate thread. That might bring you quicker answers. There are also some experts on the Antique Roses forum that can help if it is an older variety. At first I thought it might be Dortmund, a Kordes climber, but the petals look too short. Beautiful photos, by the way.

Could you get a pic of the mother plant, or at least describe its habit; was it once-blooming, a big climber, a straggly bush? How old do you think it is? Hopefully, someone recognizes it from the pics, but more information (if you have it) helps.
