We are having a heat wave:-(

I expect most roses to fry by the end of the day... How can anyone find rose growing satisfactory? All winter I waited for an awesome spring flush, and there it goes... I cut some roses for indoors and took pictures of some of the rest, at least to have a memory.

Here are the boquets I cut. I am no good at making sophisticated arrangements, and mostly just stick a few blooms together in a vase (or a kiddie plastic cup :-))

They're all very beautiful roses and I especially like the last rose arrangement. The colors are wonderful together.

The weather is just so crazy, it seems it goes from one extreme to the other, no happy medium. Your roses look great, I especially like the color of Carding Mill and the foliage on this one is so healthy and clean. Thanks for sharing your roses, they all really look beautful in spite of the heat.

I would put the Bluestone plants in the ground. I bought plants from them during their Mem. Day sale this Spring and last, and they are pretty root-bound in their little pots, so I try to get them in the ground ASAP. They seem to spend the first season getting established and growing roots. Most flowered last summer, but only a few blooms. This Spring, last year's Bluestone plants are taking off like gangbusters! I just hosted a plant swap this weekend, and now have all these new plants that need to be planted, along with lots of winter-sown babies too (zinnias, tomatoes, chile peppers etc). So, if I waited until for perfect transplant conditions, i.e. cooler, cloudy, with a little rain in the forecast, it would be September before all these plants were in the ground! So I started planting stuff out late yesterday afternoon, despite the heat. Water the plants or seedlings well beforehand so the plants are hydrated, don't let them dry out during transplant, and keep them well-watered after. Use something to shade them for a few days if they are going into blazin' full sun and they aren't used to it.

Yes, I guess it is a poblano until you dry it. All I know is that's what they called it at the nursery I bought it from: "ANCHO MULATO - mild; Ancho/Poblano Type; 3 to 5 inches long by 2 to 2.5 inches wide; medium thick flesh; matures from dark green to brown; pendant pods; green leaves; 36 to 42 inches tall; Mid Season; Uses: Large Stuffing, Mexican Cuisine, Mole, Powder, Roasting; called "poblano" when fresh, "ancho" when dried; smoky flavor; C.annuum. That IS a lovely gift, and I know Teresa will put it to good use. As for a scarf in LA, Ashley tells me that scarves are the latest fashion rage, EVERYBODY wears them, and indoors too! Well, everyone except me because I'm too hot and I'm out of step with today's fashions, LOL. Teresa, could you do kind of a "loose" weave and just make a fashionable scarf instead of a warm one? The weather seems to be changing everywhere from what used to be considered the norm. We're in mid May, here in So. Central Mo and DH keeps saying it feels like Feb. Was in mid 50s yesterday and I was cold all day, did warm up some today. It's been staying 15 to 20 degrees cooler than usual for this time of year. That is unusual for that area Clare, surprised me when I read the heading of your post. I do remember back when I graduated from Watsonville high school some 53 years ago, I remember it was a hot day in June, unusual, and some of the girls fainting from the heat. We were on the football field and it was hot.

We are having a Bug Wave here........I am so disgusted with so many of my blooms ruined. You would think I was working my buns off to provide a feast for thrips and Japanese beetles!

The heat wave here will start soon enough - after our 5 minute Spring weather ends.

I must have gotten up on the wrong side of the bed today!

I love roses in a vase just like you did it--Don't like formal arrangments.

I love your Zephirine Drouhin. The clear pink is just a show stopper and I find the overall appearance of this rose very romantic, not to forget her incredible fragrance. Mine is still not open yet, but with this heat that might be a good thing ;-)!

Your photo of Pretty Jessica is so toughing in its beauty. I don't know what it is about this rose, but I find it irresistible. I am so glad that I got her as a band this year, but she still has not set a flower, yet. I really like the pink companion plant, which looks a little bit like a gladiolus, but I don't think it is one. Can you please let me know that name of it?

I love all your informal flower arrangements! My favorite is the pale pink first one. I guess I am in a blush pink mood. I really like April in Paris!

The weather forecast says 101 degrees for our area today and it was already pretty hot yesterday. So far my rose flowers didn't fry but are opening in an almost crazy speed, except Burgundy Iceberg and Sweetness are a little bit burned. I watered them very well yesterday and cross my fingers that they all will survive today! Tomorrow the temperatures are supposed to be in the 80s again and form Wednesday on back down in the 70s, so there is hope!

Thank you Les and ramblinrosez for you encouragement.

I know the feeling, Lynn. I used to live in Dallas, and the two Margo Kosters I was growing there died in their first season from too much heat and not enough water (mostly my fault, not the weather's :-)). By and large, all these setbacks are temporary, and rose-growing is still very enjoyable. I hope you will post some pictures of your roses!

Florence, thank you for being so nice. I remember a picture of your Zephirine that you posted a while ago. It is a gorgeous rose! How is it doing this year?

Organic, I am glad you are getting SDLM. Mine is grafted, probably on multiflora. The foliage is very sickly, and if the spring is at all cool the blooms ball horribly. But when they open, it is one great rose!
We should compare notes on Pretty Jessica. Mine is grafted, probably on multiflora, probably from Hortico, bought from Regan. It would be interesting to see how it does compared to an own root. The blooms next to it are Byzantine Gladiolus. I like the smaller flowers because they don't compete as much with the big multipetaled blobby roses I have next to them.
I am glad your roses are doing well through your 101 weather. :-)

Very nice! I can empathize, living near Sacramento. My roses that were opening so nicely got crisped, too. Ugh, if it isn't one thing, it is another. Rose lovers are very patient, hopeful folks, I guess.

Masha, thanks for answering my question regarding the pink companion plant of Pretty Jessica. So it is a plant in the gladiolus family! I guess you have just enabled me to a Byzantine Gladiolus ;-). I think it goes so well as a companion plant with the roses, thanks for inspiring me! I am not a hundred percent sure, but I believe I saw a white flowering one in a garden on Coronado last weekend. Could that be the case?

Actually I was little bit too optimistic in terms of the hot weather yesterday, here. My Sweetness started to wilt even though it was well watered (maybe that is because it still in a black plastic pot), but I rescued two blooms and brought them indoors! Altogether my roses survived just fine and I think its due to the wind that is almost always blowing here on hot days. I am really thankful for that as it seems not only to cool down the roses a little bit, but me too ;-)! So one more hot day to go and then it should go back to cooler temperatures, here.

Zephirine Drouhin is still not open but she is working on it. Today was the first day where I could detect a very light whiff of her awesome smell on two buds starting to barely open!

How are your roses doing? I hope they are OK!
