Leaves turning yellow and falling, how to know the cause?

I have a plumeria plant that I started from a seed this past spring. It has been indoors all year. It has been growing like crazy and is now about 10" tall with a 14" leaf span. Recently I have noticed that the lower leaves are yellowing, turning slightly brown in places, and falling off. So far I have lost 3 leaves. I read some of the other posts that include the same symptoms, but I still have some questions. Will a plumeria start going dormant just from a decrease in sunlight? Even if the temperature is the same? In addition to the yellowing leaves, the new growth has slowed to almost none. Is there a way to tell if the plant is going dormant, the soil is staying too damp, or if it just needs more iron (I was watering with a high phosphate fertilizer through the summer). Any advice is greatly appreciated!
