About the same, even in Wisconsin. Most of the time I pay $18-20 from a nursery. There's one here that charges $30 per rose and I don't buy much from there unless I can't find it anywhere else. It's about the same online but you have to factor in shipping charges. I don't worry too much about the price when I buy online though since the quality and variety are so much more important. Oh, and if the rose is too cheap (those $14 ones from the big box stores) there's usually a reason. I don't buy those roses either.

I have both and I get summer temps in the 100s. SECRET for me has never been a real good performer except in the fall. It doesn't bloom all that great and only has one or two at a time. It's planted in a semi-shady area, where other roses do very well. Could just be a bad plant tho. It's probably 15yrs old. CALIFORNIA DREAMIN' did nothing the first couple yrs. Finally last yr it bloomed pretty decently. It was in a big pot, but I planted it in the ground in the late fall, so maybe it will do even better this yr. It has prettier blooms with much more vivid coloring.

You cannot judge the bloom quality from the very first bloom on a rose. Roses take 3 years to mature. Some roses will have different characteristics depending on the season, temperature, time of day, etc. Fragrance is also variable. What is strong to one person can be nothing to someone else. Let your plant grow up to be an adult, then judge, please.

Mine just started blooming, but doesn't look like that. I'll take a picture in the morning. It looks like a couple more of the buds will be opened. Actually, I didn't much look at the first bloom today, as I was busy running around. This evening, it looks like it could be termed mauve, but it is a mauve blend. More tomorrow! You may have gotten a mislabeled plant from Reagans - which is quite unusual!

Sorry, Azure. Your awesome blog was loading too slowly for me at the time I asked you about California Dreamin's scent. Light so far aye? And although it is young yet you don't foresee it being a powerhouse in the fragrance department. Sigh . . . . oh well it's still a beauty!! :)

Beautiful pictures, Azure! It's funny. I got this rose two yrs ago from Regan's, sight unseen. No pics anywhere that yr, just a description of "mauve blend" rose. When Mine bloomed and looked like yours, I emailed Regan's with a picture and asked them if that's what it was supposed to look like, or if it might be the wrong rose, since there was no "mauve" in this rose. They emailed back, saying that was not the right rose and they would replace it next season. Well, they forgot, and so did I. No replacement. But I didn't really mind, because awhile after that, I finally found some pics of the rose, and was pretty sure mine was the right one. Why in the heck they called it a "mauve blend" is beyond me. I see now that HMF calls it a "cream with pink edges." I have my plant in a big pot, and last yr it never did bloom and didn't grow much either. I was really disappointed, because I wanted to see what it would do in the second yr. I sure hope it does better this yr.

Yes, Dove. Unfortunately, the bloom isn't very fragrant. Sorry the blog loaded so slowly! I've tweeked it so hopefully it will load faster now.

Beth, what a funny story! I wonder if they got it mixed up with Paradise Found or another new mauve intro.
