Unknown Pepper Plant Query

Hi there,

My neighbour gave me a pot with 4 pepper plants in the spring, but he said he didn't know what type they were.

Now they have grown and are producing peppers, I must admit they have me stumped also as I don't know their name/variety.

When the pepper first grew they were bright green, after a few weeks they went dark with a patchy brownish tint, and now after a month one of them has started to turn bright yellow.

I'm not sure if they will all turn yellow, or if they will go from yellow to red, but I'm curious to find out.

I've uploaded a photo to show the plant in question, and if anyone can tell me the pepper type I'd appreciate your help.

Bytheway, I'm not talking about the Cayenne plants in the background, only the large unknown peppers at the front of the image :)

Did the buds have gold specks on them near the center?

The nipple at pod ends looks Baccatum.

I agree, they easily could be C.baccatum. They look like a pepper that is similar to Aji Limon, but larger. Can't think of the name at the moment.

BTW, Chillydog, those aren't cayennes in the background. They are likely Thai or Vietnamese - probably Thai since Thai are much more common in the States. Cayennes are pendant and somewhat larger, with a different plant shape.

Bird pepper or Tepin (I'm leaning toward Tepin, I grow them). They grow vertically, plant is covered with them. They start green then turn Deep red. Quite hot. Some thai peppers are similar, but the peppers are longer.

My experience with Thai Chilis is the the Thai Hot. It doesn't match the size or growing style at all. My hots grew upright in bunches. The shape is fairly close but a bit fatter than my Thai Hots. Could possibly be another variety of Thai chili though. I am growing Thai Dragons this year in addition to the Thai Hots this year again. But I don't know if they are similar or not. Here is my Thai Hot from last year.

im pretty sure the one on the left is some kind of thai pepper plant....this late in the season...and what with it already having peppers on it....i dont think the plant is going to have a big growth spurt....so i wouldnt pick off the flowers...just let them turn into peppers....if it is in fact a thai plant like i think...it will be a real high producer no matter what the size of the plant the one on the right...i want to say it might be a thai too....but with big leaves like that im a little hesitant to say so....id wait for a more experienced guest of the forum to put their input in on that one

Scotch Bonnets are one of those that has become so generalized that you don't really know what you'll end up with until it sets fruit. Some are really bonnet shaped, some are more pendant, yellow, red, etc... So, basically, you've got what you've got, probably no way to know *really* what it is other than a hot red pepper in the c.chinese family.

Hey thanks for your answers, much appreciated.

I do recall there was a yellow/gold circle [specs] around the inner part of the flower.

Just so you know, the green pepper in the photo is 10cm long. Ok I'm happy to go with Baccatum.

Thank for the heads up on my supposed Cayenne's, this is my first year of growing chilies so I'm getting a few things wrong :) Thanks for letting me know.

I've uploaded a better photo so you can see them properly. I got the seeds from a friend who said they were Tabasco?

Wow those guys are doing great in those little pots! Looks like you know how to keep em happy.
Not sure about Tabasco on the last pic, but they do look a LOT like my super chilis (hot pequin) how long are the ripe pods?

I bet the roots are all packed in there? I am pretty new to growing hot peps too but you should consider transplanting them to some bigger pots at some point. I have a C.chinense in a 2.5 gal pot that has filled that pot with roots in one summer. The Thai varieties don't seem to grow as big and I have no Idea about baccatum, I plan on getting seeds to start one this winter.

Tobasco ( Capsicum frutescens) does grow upright peppers so it is possible. Your pods seem a bit longer than Tobascos I have grow tho.

The pods vary from approx 6cm up to 8cm. They have a good kick, I'd say similar to the Apache's I've got, but they aren't as sweet tasting.

The reason I keep them in the smaller pots is when I transplanted others into much bigger pots in May, all they did was grow in height, whereas the one's in the smaller pots started flowering then producing pods. So I figured they must be happy as they are, easy to manage and I get a good crops off each plant.

I water when they need it and give liquid feed once a week. But I keep them on the dry side rather than wet, as I found the leaves wilted when I over watered.

Just out of interest, I've uploaded a photo of my friends plant who gave me the seeds, he calls the plant 'Mother', as mine and other friends plants have all came from the seeds of this plant. She is now 2 years old, so seeing this may help you determine the exact type of plant?

He keeps her in a slightly bigger pot than mine, but just waters and feeds the same. This is her second monster crop this year. He took all the first pods off her in July, and she immediately started flowering again. He is now just waiting for the pods to turn red.

I have basically the same opinion as DMF.
The yellowing pattern in the 1st pic, on the left. is similar to Lemon Drop I have. But the size does not match.
The upright ones can be : Poinsettia, or Thai Hot. I have both of them. Hard to tell the difference when green.
