Replant before growth starts, as soon as the soil thaws and is not too goopy--during a dry spell if possible. If you must work with heavy soil when wet, work it as little as possible and do not tamp! Use lots of water to settle after replanting. Prune the canes down past any brown center pith, which indicates winter damage. Preserve all the fleshy roots if you can. They will bloom after replanting, but it is a setback. Do not cut flowers with long stems next summer, but just remove the faded flowers. All the stems and leaves help the plants build energy.

any/all of the asian spring flowering roses with special mention for 'our' rose, the locally bred Cantabridgiensis. my small hulthemia collection, including the stellar Eyes for You several Lens hybrid musks - Pleine de Grace (although enormous), Sibelius, Matchball and Jacqueline Humery) Helenae, Splendens, moyesii, Scharlachglut, Madame Gregoire Staechelin - a mix of once flowering lovelies. Hebe's Lip my few pimpinellas - Double White, Marbled Pink, Red Nelly, Falkland and Dunwich rose a couple of multiflora ramblers - Goldfinch, Aglaia Workhorses - Golden Wings, Moonlight, Blue for You, Darlows. Iceberg. Tolstoi (my only setigera). Alba semi-plena, Nevada and (surprisingly) Aimee Vibert.

That is very very pretty, Jean! I love how the color seems deeper on the edges. Have you guys seen those mini roses that are being sold as indoor plants needing only bright indirect light at Hm.Dpt? I saw this weekend and was like "are you KIDDING ME?.that is WIERD." .. and the promptly bought one in red and white. Will kick myself later if they die a swift death when I could have used the $$ on something else. I think it's great that yours will live happily in a container for a while.

When I gardened in zone 4/5 I had good luck with Rosa gallica versicolor, Mme. Hardy, Comte de Chambord, Fantin-Latour, Reine des Violettes, Kognin von Danemark and Baronne Prevost. But the Baronne was only hardy to the snow line. Any exposed canes were winter killed so a good mulching is recommended (but it does bloom on new wood). RdV was much hardier. It only showed some tip damage. I found most minis on their own roots to be pretty hardy. Exposed canes did blacken but most of the canes under the mulch or snow were nice and green in the spring. I did have hardiness problems with Winsome, Starina and Grace Sewart for some reason. Irresistible and Gourmet Popcorn were really hardy and had the least amount of winter kill in the spring. I had decent success wintering over hybrid teas. Of course I buried the bud unions 3+ inches and usually had blackened canes down to the ground in the spring but most of them bounced back once the soil warmed. There were a few that did not like Wisconsin winters: St. Patrick, Royal Highness, Secret, Gold Medal and Honor come to mind right away. Mr. Lincoln, Double Delight, Pristine, Garden Party and Folklore did well for me. These 5 survived 16+ Green Bay winters and I had a handful of others surviving in that garden for a shorter number of years before we moved last year. About 8 years ago I got real bold and tried to grow old teas and chinas in pots up north! They survive several winters in our unheated attached garage. I now grow these types down here in containers year round.
