What is your favorite hot chili...
Comments (34)I tend to gravitate toward the chinenses, as I find they are the best tasting. Of note: 1) Burkina Yellow-if you have not grown these, please do. They are hot, but they are incredibly tasty. 2) Antillais Caribbean-hot and very tasty. 3) Chocolate Habanero-very to extremely hot with an excellent smoky taste. 4) Limon-tastes like a lemon, unlike the 'lemon' that you were sold. 5) Scotch Bonnet, Red (from tomatogrowers.com)-fruity, productive. 6) Red Habanero-great fruity flavor. 7) Datil-awesome smoky/fruity balance. 8) Venezuelan Sweet Habanero-same flavor as a very hot chinense with no heat. Tastes like a red hab. 9) True Jamaican Scotch Bonnet-great fruity flavor. Jamaican Hot Chocolate-similar to Chocolate Hab, may taste better. Fatalii-extremely hot! If you can handle the heat, the strong citrusy flavor with fruity undertones is a great treat. Caribbean Red Habanero-another extremely hot pepper which has a wonderful fruity flavor beneath the burn. Harold's St. Bart-what an awesome surprise for me! Tastes just like a Yellow Scotch Bonnet, maybe slightly less hot, but just as wonderfully fruity and flavorful. Awesome. Cumari-little 'bird's eye' peppers, C. chinense, with great fruity flavor. Very hot, and if you are making sauces you may want to gravitate toward larger pods, but if you don't mind popping a few directly in your mouth now and then, go for it. The best thing about the above list: they are all commercially available as seed, except the Venezuelan Sweet Hab, which you can get as plants from thechilewoman.com. You can also substitute Aji Dulce #2 for Ven. Sweet Hab, as the Aji Dulce #2 is also very good. The heat ranges of the above vary quite a bit but I listed them in terms of best flavor, not in order though. Good luck!!! Mark in NJ...See MoreWhat's your favorite pepper to make paprika?
Comments (24)Thanks Rick awesome! I guess I'll have to seed them with the tomatoes, not a problem! I just bought ten 15 gallon grow bags, one 20 gallon, and one 30 gallon (yikes!) I never used them before. I grow in raised beds, and pots, but I running out of room, and money, so the cheaper grow bags fit the bill. Rick send address if you want the seeds, or I'll get it off the package. And Gertrude, if you want 5 seeds of Leutschauer pepper, just email me your address. I don't want anything in return. I will be out of seeds after that though, so sorry no more trades.. i need to keep 5 for myself for backup. Leutschauer pepper seems to be a favorite for paprika....See MoreWhy aren't my hot peppers hot?
Comments (13)I have found that Jalapenos vary significantly in heat levels - some are decently hot and some are mild. I like the flavor nonetheless... I would say if you're looking for "hot" hot peppers, you need to mosey on to chinense varieties. I eat hot foods routinely down at the local Thai restaurant. I give them my super hot varieties because I have more than I need for powders. Normally, I can actually use Caribbean Red Hot's for sandwiches, etc. But this year, I grew 7 pots and Trinidad Scorpions and I now know that 700,000 scoville units is about my limit. These babies are hot beyond what I used to consider hot. My Thai restaurant will slice up one 7 pot into about 3 dishes and all of us are crying halfway through curry beef with green beans or beef bai kra pow. They're unbelievable. You need to upgrade to the superhots if that's what you want. And, they're easy to grow..........See MoreFavorite Beer to drink with Hot Peppers?
Comments (14)Mostly PBR consumed here... just cheap generic-ish beer. A fan of Atwater Brewing Co... their Hell beer is amazing. Mad Hatter Ale a favorite. Two Hearted Ale is very decent. For a hoppy hop beer I love Lake Superior ESB. It has been awhile but I make stout that is priceless. Hard to find good hops these days. Maybe the "coloring" of memory but it seems years ago the hops tasted better. As most brewers recall a terrible plague destroyed the noble hops. Not a huge fan of Cascade hops but Sierra Nevada with the green lable is a decent mid-priced beer. Also a fan of their Porter but it is very filling. Frankenmuth Brewery is about 45 minutes from my home. Years ago before the tornado hit it had the most wonderful brews... I drank many bottles of Bad Frog which was really excellent beer. When it was rebuilt I really enjoyed the heffe weisen they had on tap. It failed economically but has reopened and I've not tried the new brews. Really miss the old brewery which had a brew shop and tours.... for about $2 a pretty girl would lead you around the place and then serve you "samples"... I took many many tours... often the only guest on the tour. Years ago I loved Sam Adams Honey Porter... I'm a fan of the Porter style in general. Alas, they seemed to have changed the recipe or the hops changed. Perhaps my taste changed but it ain't the same anymore....See More- 13 years ago
