I'm sorry if I misunderstood your earlier post. This one may not directly connect with your posts either, but it is information that bears directly on registered names. There are two different things often referred to as "registered". They are quite different and can lead to confusion if not carefully defined. The registration to which I was referring was registering a rose with the International Cultivar Registration Authority - Rosa, which is the American Rose Society. This registration puts the rose in the historical record for roses internationally. It also makes sure no other rose can be registered using the same name. However, it has no control over sales names. Roses are often registered using their code name, or varietal denomination, and their sales names are just listed as synonyms. Thus Veterans' Honor (aka City of Newcastle Bicentennary, Five Roses Rose, and Lady in Red) is registered as Jacopper. The second registration is acquiring a registered trademark for the name. This is the source of the î symbol following names. This comes from the government and supposedly insures that no one else can sell a different rose using the registered trademark name. However, it does not keep the company that trademarked the name from using it for more than one rose. Poulsen, Kordes and others spend a fair amount of time and money registering names with the European trademark authority, and they feel they need to use them often to get the benefit from it. Thus they both do sell more than one rose using the same trademarked name at the same time. I am not aware of any cases where they used more than one trademarked name for the same rose, although I suppose it is possible. Adding confusion to the situation, some companies also trademark the collection names. Thus you could have a rose with a trademarked name being sold in a collection that also has a trademarked name. They could sell the same rose with the trademarked name in more than one collection with a trademarked collection name, or they could sell two roses using the same trademarked name - one in each collection. But no one else can use any of these trademarked names. Finally, the rules say if you register a rose with the ICRA-R, you cannot trademark that registered name. Or if you trademark a name with the government, you cannot use that name to register the rose with the ICRA-R. Life would certainly be easier for all of us if each hybridizer would only use each name once, and no one would try to use a name someone else already used. However, that isn't the world we live in.

Hi Lime, I have Winsome and Santa Claus near minature roses, an un-named salmon colored minature which looks like Sonja, and a yellow minature. I do not know anything about their hardiness, I live in a zone where I do not have to worrry about that to much. Tell me more about your daffodils and your lilies. Kathy

My mom didn't want to have to weed, so she put down the black stuff (I hope it was fabric and not plastic) but then covered it with white stone, which just reflects any sun and fries the plants from underneath. I think the hydrangea is OK just b/c it's so big (5 ft tall, 5 ft wide!). oakley - I'd say if the Kordana (pretty hardy line, I don't know what yours are) survived a CT winter with major ice storms, all just covered with bark mulch and leaves, you could do the same. In fact, plant them now with good compost and some bone meal, to let them get their roots established b4 it gets cold. I've grown cherry tomatoes in pots outside, but generally don't like anything potted b/c they dry out too quickly and get pot bound. It will look dead in the spring, but as soon as it gets warm (ask on rose forum) cut the canes back to encourage new growth. I've never grown roses til last year, i think I cut the Kordana back around the beginning of May this year (can't plant anything til end of May b/c of frost), it had a few leaves at the base already and I was surprised. The Cherish looked totally dead, but I cut it back at the same time, didn't think I'd even see flowers this year but it came back strong and I actually had 2 flushes. Wish I had pics of when I first planted the Parades and how tall they are now, but I don't. I may be able to dig up an old photo of the Kordana from earlier this year.

Hi Michelle! First off, where do you live or what zone are you in. I see that google page is in Celsius, are you in Canada? If it is at all possible you need to get the rose outside and keep it outside. ROSES ARE NOT HOUSE PLANTS!!! I know they sell these gift roses for inside but they are also meant to be disposable once they stop blooming. That way they can sell you more, lol! That's also why they stick in three or four cuttings to make the pot look fuller and have more blooms to attract buyers. But they do not have to be disposable if they are put outside where roses belong. It would actually do best planted in the ground. I would not recommend trying to separate them Some people have been successful at it but it's a very iffy proposition and you could lose them all. I would just re-pot them up into a little larger pot as a unit. Make sure your pot has good drainage holes and DO NOT put a tray under it. The water needs to be able to drain freely out the bottom. Always use a good light weight potting soil too. No top soil or garden soil, it's too heavy and won't drain well. It looks like you are going to have some rain this week so that should be plenty of water. Roses like about an inch of water per week. That's not a lot in a small pot so don't over water it. Only water it if when you stick your finger into the soil up to the second knuckle and it comes out dry. You don't say what kind of critters you're worried about but usually the worst pests are rabbits and deer. For rabbits just find a place off the ground, maybe a table top? Deer, well, they are a problem! It looks fairly healthy so I don't think you need to worry about it dying. Just give it good sunshine, water and a little fertilizer (half strength to start) and it should be fine.
