I just love the Desert Rose pictures. However, I think the belly one is my favorite, then the one with what looks like a pool cover in the back, the blue whatever it is in the middle of it. That one looks like she's sitting there all prim and proper, with her legs crossed. Love that one! LoL

Your Daughters dog makes me smile too. So cute! My two beasts won't tolerate clothes put on them. And my Dane nearly got a trip to the pound today. Woke up to a pillow strewn all over the house. Bits and pieces of it everywhere! As well as my Pantech Breakout destroyed. Dang Great Dane took it off the end table and shattered the screen on my smart phone. =(

Great pics. Do you hand pollinate your DR flowers or are you just lucky? I've never had a seed pod.

Isn't it sad to see the pool cover on? We don't close down the pool until several weeks after it's too cold to swim just because it's so depressing to look at. lol I HATE the cold.

Sure. That's possible. OR Tina Marie might be the original. The problem is, we are unlikely EVER to find proof, one way or another. The rose grows at Sangerhausen. But the labeling at Sangerhausen is problematical because with one problem and another, there's no clear line of identification. (Sangerhausen's loss of id on some roses is the source of some odd mistakes -- such as the confusion between 'Pink Gruss an Aachen' and 'Irene Watts.') I think that, unless someone comes up with REALLY good evidence, they are going to just have the names they have, and as long as we all know what roses we're talking about I personally have no big problem with that. Ingrid - I don't know whether this would work for you or not, but I remember someone here saying she dealt with Blush Noisette's tendency to hang on to old blooms by regularly giving the canes a little shake as she went by, which released all the dead petals. She said it was no big deal to do was very effective. If you do try it and find it works, I'd be interested to know, since I think about BN quite often as a possible inclusion should I ever get a garden going - whether here or in England - but am also put off by the prospect of all those dead brown hangers-on. Certainly, deciduous trees. I should add that the native trees and shrubs are almost all deciduous, and I garden planning on winter sun and summer shade. Many Mediterranean plants are adapted to that, for example cyclamen, hellebores, and spring-flowering bulbs. I also have extensive evergreens, and I place them making sure they don't block sun where it's needed. About fungal diseases. I take it for granted that half my roses, more or less, are going to mildew in the summer. It's not fatal and they recover afterward, and it's not like I go out to see them then in any case, summer being so dreadfully hot. A shift in rainfall patterns could ruin all this. Lately we've seen more rain in spring and early summer, and less in winter. Mediterranean plants aren't adapted to this and it may cause more disease and other problems. I've gotten more rust in recent years, though the roses have all survived. Black spot under those conditions could also become a threat. Currently it mainly shows up in fall, when the roses are getting ready to drop their leaves anyway: it's unsightly but not destructive. We've had an extremely dry and sunny winter, and it's been interesting to observe the Teas. Temperatures have frequently dropped a few degrees below freezing, warming up into the forties or, more recently, the fifties. The Teas have been leafing out for several weeks now and are putting out some blooms. 'Sanguinea' has had a few flowers all winter. (By the way, raingreen, if you haven't tried this variety, you might want to: it's a beautiful tough rose.) The frost hasn't done any damage. The short days, very short here at the 45th Parallel, haven't kept them from leafing out and flowering. In short, plain sun, not temperatures or length of days, appears to stimulate growth and bloom. I absolutely can't extrapolate from my conditions to those of southern California with its much lower rainfall and, as has been noted, different precipitation patterns. I agree with raingreen that soil type is critical. I've been struggling with our pottery clay since we moved here, but at least it can be amended into good soil, though it takes a lot of work. For those who have a Mediterranean climate but get adequate winter chill, I'd like to say a word in favor of Gallicas, Damask, Albas, Centifolias, and near kin. Their species ancestors live on our land: R. gallica, R. canina, R. arvensis (the Ayrshire ramblers). These are Mediterranean plants, too. They sleep during the chilly dark winters, as they used to be, leaf out and set buds during the lengthening days and abundant moisture of spring, flower in late spring when rainfall is drying up and it's getting hot, and sit quietly ripening hips through the summer drought. They're beautiful tough plants, and they can take clay. Raingreen, thanks for the kind words. I've been reading your comments with interest. Waterless gardening has been on my mind since I lived in western Washington state in the nineties.

Nice, Laura! Karyn, I have LOTS of Adeniums and have never gotten ONE seed pod, either. I see flying insects on them during the summer, but apparently they aren't doing their 'job'!

I dont like to see the pool cover on either. The chill in the air is here in Virginia. Cant believe it Dec 1st..WHere has the time gone? Oh my!!! We usually cover ours around Labor day. Seems that in the past, once the kids went back to school noone went in again. So it was covered... I agree, i like to see the pool open even when its to cold to swim in.

The cold weather is fine with me especially when it snows...love to be somewhere watching the snowfall, sitting beside the fire.. Thats a great feeling!! : )

Then...to welcome spring, summer again!!! Love all of the four seasons!!!

All of my DR's stay close to each other on my bench during the summmer and that is the way they are naturally pollinated. I have never tried to hand pollinate them, but it could be fun. Maybe next year!!!

Okay, now that I've had a few days to recover from cute overload--you gotta warn us when you're posting double(!) pics of that dog--I can say that Laura, you must have the magic touch with the seed pods.

The seedppods are liking something!! : ) I have a minature Hibiscus that has flowered (still blooming now) and also has some seedpods..its so small and adorable!
