My cayenne pepper plant is turning purple

I'm a first time cayenne pepper grower but I'm pretty sure that one of my plants is defective. haha. I have two plants growing in the same pot. one of them is growing just fine and fruiting but the others blossoms are falling off after i pollinate them. not to mention the fact that the stems of the leaves are turning purple!! is the problem the seed it sprouted from or is the other plant taking all the nutrients even though they are both the same size and neither is loosing any leaves?

If it's anything like this it's normal and not a problem

Flowers drop for several reasons including temperature variations. Peppers are self pollinating and don't need help from you. Perhaps that is contributing to your problem . Let them be.

Hence the reason for number 11 on this list........

Flower drop probable causes:

1. Day temp too high >95F
2. Night temp too low 3. Too much nitrogen fertilizer
4. Too much water
5. Low light levels (reduces fertility).
6. Very low humidity (reduces fertility)
7. Poor air circulation (air circulation contributes to pollination).
8. Lack of pollinating insects.
9. Size of pot
1. Too much mineral in feedwater.
2. Too much grower attention.

my cayennes have usually grown pretty tall (2-3') and open...other hot peppers grow differently, some short and dense, some tall and open. I don't eat peppers (wife does), but dry them and use as "red pepper flakes" in just about everything I cook. I'll also use them to make hot pepper oil and vinegar. you can find recipes/instructions for all on the internet (all over the place, just google it)

Yep, the Cayennes seem to get to full size quick and then just sit there. It takes a while to start seeing the red. The general consensus is that letting pods develop on immature plants will hinder its growth somewhat as the plant has to put a lot of energy into growing the pods. I am not sure where you live and how long your growing season is, but you can pick them now if you like. They do not have to be ripe before picking them. They likely won't have as much heat however. I think once you do pick them, you will see a lul for a day or two and then they will kick back into gear and you will start to see some new growth. Bruce

well, they could be getting wet feet from all your rain. Peppers really don't like being damp. However, could you post some pictures. It is a little difficult to help sometimes with just a description. kendra

After a few days, the open flowers shrivel and should drop off. Sometimes, the peppers grow through the dried flowers and leave like a "skirt" around the pepper. If it concerns you, carefully remove the dead flower, but make sure you hold the stem when you pull the dead flower off or you could pull off the whole thing. I say instead, just wait and it probally will fall off by itsself. Yes, dried flowers or dropped off means the pepper is on the way. Now if the pepper stem drops off with the flower, well, thats a different issue.

Pots are cheap. Why plant two plants in one pot? That is asking for trouble! Like putting all your eggs in one basket.
