Newbie mistake - Blue plumeria???

Let me say that I have posted a couple of times and have learned a lot from the advice I have read. I really enjoy seeing the beautiful flowers that you take the time to share. Before I started lurking here, I succumbed to a scam. I purchased some really pretty Blue cuttings from Thailand. Groan...

I negotiated a return of my entire purchase price and eBay banned the seller, for how long, I don't know. To warn other eBayers I created a warning auction of my own. A link will be below if any are interested. If I can prevent one person (on eBay or on here) from making the same mistake, I will be happy.

The plants I received are doing great, although it is anyone's guess as to what they will truly be...

I commend you for doing that. Its really sad that there are people who take advantage like that. I wish we could stop it for good.

Jeffrey, that is absolutely priceless!! I love that you took the initiative to post the auction and warn people--BRAVO!

Unscrupulous sellers will keep doing whatever they need to to make a buck from buyers and Ebay has no incentive to stop them.

My only suggestion to get more eyes on your auction would be to lower the price and offer free shipping. Thank you for doing this!

seysonn - NCHFP isn't just some unknown organization. It is the research labs for USDA/FDA and are the recognized national authority in safe food preservation/canning for both commercial and home food canners. All other approved sources of home food canning info/recipes/instructions are based on their recommendations and regulations. And yes, if you explore their many publications (or take their classes) they are well aware of the whys and do explain how density can be calculated and why their testing has determined that adding flours, pastas, and other thickeners cannot be recommended. Basically it because the amount of processing times required to compensate for the increased density would be so detrimental to the quality of the food that it would be unpalatable. Further since the thickener of choice is easily added at preparation/serving time after the jar is opened there is no justifiable reason to process it to death simply to compensate for the thickeners. So it isn't a matter of just adding 5 or 10 min here or there. Not to mention that very few home canners are able to or have the interest in measuring the density of their foods and doing all the calculations. Especially when it has already been done by professionals. Beef stew is already processed for 90 min. (quarts) so say you add flour to it. Now you have to calculate the density. Density = mass divided by volume. Calculate the mass of the container, then the mass of the container with all the liquids and subtract the mass of the container and you have the mass of the liquid. Then you do the same for all the solids. Then measure the volumes, etc. etc. etc.and discover that the density of it has now increased x fold. How many min do you has to that 90 min processing time for each increase in density? 10 min, 20 min, 60 min? What happens to all the vegetables in that stew? Slushy mush with a scorched taste most likely. You really want to do all that? If it is enzymes, bacteria, they say that @ 240F they are all destroyed. No they say at 240+ for a specific period of time and that period of time differs from bacterial pathogen to pathogen. The time is always the variable. Campbell does it all the time. Lots of discussions here about the many differences between commercial processing in high pressure autoclaves that you can play football in and use 260-280 degrees F at 50-70 psi (after first irradiating the foods) vs. the common home pressure canner at 240 and 10-15 psi. OMG, I've been ROFLMAO reading through all these posts . . . they're priceless! My worst decorating disaster was way back in my very first apartment down in Deerfield Beach, Florida. The landlords liked me and so they ok'd me painting one (huge) wall in my bedroom as long as I agreed to put it back to (stark) white before I moved. My boyfriend at the time was an artist, who also had no previous wall painting experience! I let him talk me into painting the wall a dark forest green and then he got the great(stupid!) idea of making a mosaic design with mirrors on it. I let him (stupidly) glue (with some heavy duty auto glue) twenty-plus 12"x12" mirrors to the wall in a huge flying bird design. I know, we must've lost our minds! Well, six months later, as I was ready to move to my new duplex, I tried getting those mirrors off the wall. OMG, what a nightmare!!! When I finished, it looked like some cannon company had used my dark green wall for target practice! I was in tears and petrified that I was never going to get that wall back to normal again. My grandfather and I worked for days patching Thank goodness my retired grandpa was brilliant when it came to that kind of stuff (heck, he was brilliant at everything!), but he was ready to toss me off my balcony when he first got a look at that wall! I was on Gramp's poop list for a couple of weeks after that, but I did learn several big lessons on what NOT to do to a wall! Did I mention that the boyfriend was not allowed back at Gram & Gramps house after that? I broke up with him a couple of weeks after that anyway. I needed a boyfriend that was smart, like my Gramp. Thanks all - it sounds like the main consensus is that I'll have to start over with this walkway. I feel guilty ripping up thriving plants! I have tried hacking them back, though not to 6" that would be a lot of work since they have hundreds of stems... but I did that with the lavenders and as you can see the remaining one did not do well with that much cut-back, it started yellowing and withering... I already removed the other one that looked worse. atmoscat, yes I think the fact that this is the perfect climate for the bush germander means that the plants outgrew their promised size. And this is AFTER just a few weeks ago I took the hedge shears to them. When it rains in winter the gigantic lavenders were bowing down and wetting our legs - had to hack them back. I have to hack them back every week filling my compost bin! So if I mostly start from scratch, what type of plan do you think would look good? I know I can look for specific plant suggestions on the CA forum, my local nursery (except do my own research on the expected final size of the plants this time!) but I posted here because I need some guidance on how to envision the plants as they grow and how to plan the spacing and heights. I was going for a pretty symmetrical look as you can see from the first attempt. Can you envision other options? Do I have room for a taller row of plants at the back and shorter in front? As you can see I tried a sort of staggered plan with the russian sages (which became completely choked out by the germanders and lavenders) and the lavenders, I just had no concept of how some of the plants would thrive and some did not do so well with the intense heat (those purple buttons for example). I can't paint anything on the exterior, it's a condo and the HOA does the exterior paint. Some home have dark green doors to match the green trim, the only other color option, but the dark green looks less welcoming back in the alcove, the cream color at least doesn't end up looking like a black hole. The design of the entryway is not the most welcoming, but on the other hand gives us privacy - a rare thing in a condo in an area where the land value is extremely high. The concrete has seen better days, too but again - belongs to the HOA technically though we may see if we can have it refinished and sealed. Marie, I can't grow vines on the walls or fence because of the HOA - they would need them removed to paint, can damage the walls and fence, can't have them grow over the top or onto the neighbor's side and vines tend to get very out of control where I live - they grow very vigorously and I'd have to trim weekly or they'd swallow up the house! I did consider running some chains or wires down the pathway and growing grape vines or something, but I'm not sure how that would look - thoughts? There is also an A/C unit to the left of the door we had installed last summer, I am trying to disguise with the pots and the reed screen I built there in the second photo up- it was the only place it could be installed so I love having A/C in the hot summer days but I hate the look of the box in the corner. Nice smell is a plus - I love the lavender smell, perhaps there are some varieties that will stay smaller/more upright? I actually hate the smell of geraniums! I removed that lantana because it smelled bad when brushed up against too. The germanders smell nice, herbal. Maybe I can put them free on craigslist and find them a new home rather than throw them in the compost bin. Thanks for all the ideas! I think I'll have to be patient and wait for end of Sept to do this, because I have a vacation coming up mid Sept and I don't want to have to have the petsitter watering plants. These are so established they barely need any water at all. I'll just have to hack them back until then, but I can draw up some plans.

There are actually only 3 germanders total - one on the left when facing our front door and 2 on the right, they have just sprawled so enormously! I have hacked them back from the path but they spread about 6-7' wide along the length of the path the the 2 on the right have blended into a single hedge more or less. I am not even sure if I can physically hack them back to 6", I will have to buy an electric hedge cutter or something, I think. I use hand shears to keep things under some degree of control now and that means weekly hedging. But it's even difficult to walk up the path with groceries or items because it's pretty narrow. Unfortunately, I think I will have to dig them up. I think I will list them free on craigslist for someone with a larger space to enjoy, because I hate to kill perfectly good, vigorous plants. Anyone on this list in the SF bar area who would like them? I dread digging them up I bet the roots are tree-like! Thanks for the artemisia suggestion, it looks like a plant I would enjoy. I'm also considering trying again with russian sage, but using "little spire" the shorter kind, i absolutely love the color. Maybe paired with something yellow, like I had in my original garden but all those smaller plants got crowded out.

Too funny. As unscrupulous as these vendors may be...they may think you are messsing with their cash flow so please be careful. I know they change their ebay names as frequently as we change our clothes but it can't be that easy to change the USDA import cert.

Never mind the fact they could probably make better money by offering an honest product and choices that people want. Its not like these trees don't grow on the side of the road over there. Who knows...they could have brought a new plant to market which was previously unknown and unleashed the law of demand. Its just a total lack of vision.

Hello Jeffrey! What you did is just awesome...AWESOME!!! I also agree that it is crappy that Ebay has noincentive to stop these bogus sellers. You would think that if they got enough complaints that they would prevent this crap from starting in the first place! Good for you! BRAVO!!!

Update - 95 views! If enough people see the auction, maybe the interest will wane and the sellers will stop. I am planning on just repeating the auction over and over after it ends.

It kind of makes me wonder how many other plants with long waits for the first bloom are being sold in the same way. A lot of individuals selling plants and seeds on ebay...

Auction ended with 134 views and I even received a request to sell them all to a person in Tahiti. Obviously it didn't translate well to French... I don't know if anyone learned anything as there are even more sellers from Thailand starting up...

I relisted it...

They do it on amazon too. I didn't buy anything but I do write reviews about the plant being photoshopped in hopes that other people will avoid them. They're really bad when it comes to roses.

I think the best thing to do is to write a Guide for eBay and try to dessminate this info on Facebook, garden clubs and forums and other forms of social media. Its not just blue plumerias, its also blue roses, rainbow roses and probably many other hoax plant varieties that eBay and Amazon does nothing to stop. I believve they have the resources to take down many of these bogus listings by flagging key terms but what have they done? They keep returning. It is just best to warn gardeners and family and friends on social media sites like Facebook.

There will always be newbies that fall for these scams, heck, thats just life and humans have been scamming each other for millenia. I find it disheartening when eBay seems to do little to stop plant sellers who abuse the site rules time and again; This include hoax plant listing and intentionally miscatgeorizing and overloading the listings with identical items.
