Pic of Dwarf Deciduous in bloom under grow lights

Since I'm in zone 4 with a short growing season, my plummies don't bloom until I stick them under grow lights in the Fall. Now I've got several plants in bud and one in bloom, Dwarf Deciduous. It's a beauty!

Wow, it looks really nice and healthy! Even my growing season is a little to short to get the best out of plumerias (unless they make their inflos before July, then they usually manage to finish blooming before going indoors). Looking forward to seeing some more pics!

Nice papaya plants! I'd like to know about the growing conditions when they are indoors...what's the room temperature where they're growing, and how often do you water them. I've had difficulties keeping papayas alive in the winter unless I have them on heat pads and under grow lights, and there's a size limit on the table where I have the heat pad. And if I just set them next to a window (it's a cold house), they eventually develop root rot, even when I water sparingly. So I've like to know your secrets, if you'll share them. John

I'm growing about 40 plumerias under T-5 high output florescent light bulbs in a basement room with very good success. I've got a Dwarf Deciduous in bloom right now with lots of buds due to open, and four other varieties in bud. I've had 1 year seedlings bloom under these lights. Quite a few are now loosing their old leaves but pushing out new ones, so not much of a dormancy. I've finally learned how to control the spider mites with a mitacide that includes neem oil. I've learned to water the plants into a drainage bucket since fertilizer salts build up in the soil. Also not to over fertilize. It's interesting what you learn through trail and error.

Very nice. Here is what I got going in my garage. It's not much but when it rains and is real cold outside my plumeria love this space. Plus it's good for my cutting I trying to root. As you can see my big rainbow cutting has just taken off in this space. You can't see it too well but there is a 12"x48" heat mat on top of my surfboard sock and it keep the bottoms nice and warm.

Hi Kevin!! Beautiful blooms!!! Congratulations on another beauty of yours... I also like the T-5 lights and I have one four foot fixture that I keep upstairs and have it set for 12 on 12 off like you!!! They don't go dormant either and some of the others that I keep upstairs close to the area go semi dormant ( they all keep one eye open.. ;-). The big guys, go in the back bedroom and are put to sleep.. It's the only way... I'm so glad to hear of the seedlings blooming and I know its not uncommon for them to take that long to see inflos, but Im Always impressed with your dedication for all of the trees and different plants that you grow in Utah. I agree with Mike.. When I first saw pics of how you boxed up your palms I think it was a Windmill. ( can't remember) and how you insulated ths big tree, I was stunned.. Your yard and even the plants you have Inside your home is incredible. I hope your son is still helping you protect during the winter, Kevin. You give hope to everyone who questions if they can grow Plumeria, Palms and other tropicals with the snow capped mountains in your backyard. Impressive to say the least.. The good news about my Butias is that I think they will all make it except one that is in my front yard. I had Jordan ( remember the guys down the street from Me who I helped start the palm tree business?) they have been so helpful now that I cant climb up in my trees and cut the dead fronds down. I'm just to old for that anymore, but these guys are the best. They came when I called and asked for assistance in hurricane cutting of the Butias. It's been two weeks since they were cut back and I see green fronds starting to emerge. I'm so happy. They look funny right now, but they are alive. The Sabals made it.... Always great to see you post Kevin. Will you do me a favor? Please post a pic of the mountains and your yard so people can see how truly dedicated you are and how cold it gets where you live? Thanks Alex & ljune. They are actually growing in a basement room with no light but what comes from the grow lights. I've also got buds on Jungle Jack's Mini-white, and Penang Peach. Others should start sending out inflos. soon.

Nothing like a little tropical jungle to brighten up your cold winters, eh? The rest of us will be looking at sticks all winter!

The DD is a beautifully shaped flower. Is it big? Fragrant? Your foliage looks great, too.

Do you have the spidermite problem with the lights? What kind of set up do you have for your Plumies?

I remember seeing a pic of the basement, but i cant remember how many set of lights you have.

Thanks Jen, Greg & Laura. The flowers are huge and mildly fragrant. They are my largest plumeria flower so far. I do have a spider mite problem but Neem oil seems to keep them under control. They are blooming under T-5 high intensity florescent lights. I have two fixtures. One has 8 light bulbs, the other 6. The light fixtures totally heat the basement room. In fact, I have to leave the door to the room open or the temperature gets up to 85 degrees without any furnace heat.

I have T-5 lights as well...I wish that i had more sets, but i think that i would be pushing it!!! LOL..

Thanks for the info on the Neem Oil.. I have used the Bayer 3 in 1 and it does pretty well. I may try the neem oil inside.

Hi Laura. Thanks! The Neem oil I use is also a 3 in 1. The brand I am using is "ferti-lome" Triple Action plus. It has insecticide, miticide and fungicide. But the "active ingredient" is Clarified Hydrophobic Neem Oil. I do have to spray now and then for new outbreaks of mites, but it does a lot better than ordinary insecticides. All of my plumeria are growing like mad under the T-5 lights. They seem to be healthy, happy and aren't showing any signs of dormancy. The leaves are nice and green. My Jungle Jack's Mini-White is now in bloom. Here's a pic.
