End of season and seed pods

Things are getting slow and those old leaves have started to yellow and fall off. So now I'm looking for seed pods and this year I am going to mark branches to be pruned with a marker or tape so I can then prune them in the greenhouse in Late Feb or Early March. Then I can start the cuttings early.

So here are the last few late season pictures of the plumeria patch. All are cell phone pics so not always the best clarity.

Dean Conklin. I was surprised that it actually bloomed this year. It had frost damage and I pruned 1/3 of it.

WOW!! Great job, so far I have only one but am hoping when the leaves fall that there are many surprises for me. If not that is fine also since I do have to many plants already. Barb

I am wondering IF I don't want to do the seed thing again, IF I trim them off now, does more energy go to the rest of the inflos and leaves still growing strong? I have done the seed thing and am doing 5 now and would rather not waste that much time on them...roxanne

I'd say it depends on the seeds. I've had, overall, less than good germination with sale seeds, and seeds from close-out vendors like Value Seeds. Some vegetable seeds seem to lose viability as time goes by. For the past two years, I've compared germination rates of older Lettuce and Basil seeds, and there is, indeed, a difference. The older seeds have a much lower germination rate, falling from the 80-100% range to the 50% range in just 1-2 years. 3-4 year old seeds drop even further. I've decided to add all my old (more than 1 year) veggie seeds to my birdseed, and buy all new for next year. Fresh seeds are cheap, compared to sowing mix, other supplies and garden space. Home gathered perennial flower seeds, and some trade seeds which were self-gathered by the trader seem to last a good long time. I have Liatris and Columbine seeds which I gathered in '02 and '03, which still got 80-100% germination this year. Same with ornamental grasses. Seeds gathered in '04 still germinated at the same rates they did in '05.

Bill - Took it to lunch today (tostada Wednesday at the local Mexican place), the owner is a bit of a chilehead too. Only three of us were brave/stupid enough to try a small piece. The flavor was nice, my initial impression is has a more pleasant flavor than a Bhut. Shortly after the flavor was the heat. It started slow but built fast and lingered for a good ten minutes or more. Should make for some good eats. :) On a side note, I think I've pulled off a minor miracle thanks to the god awful hot weather. I had two 7 Pot Douglahs I started from your seed back in January that I killed in May. I figured what the heck, dropped another seed in a a pot and started it directly outside. Yesterday I noticed it has a pod growing on it. Three months from seed to pod, not too bad for a super hot. Now I play the waiting game hoping it will grow and ripen before frost hits.

I harvested all my Jalapeno and Garden Salsa the day after our first frost September 20(unusual for us). The foliage blackened a bit and none of the peppers were mature but no matter to me. The Thai Hot and Giant Thai continued to stay out perfectly well continuing to mature to red...it seems they love the cooler 55-60 degree days and 35-40 degree nights. Also these cooler temps seemed to exilarate (sp?)pepper maturity. They were turing red in the warmer weather but not near as much. I finally pulled some of the plants and have the majority drying on a screen w/paper toweling laid over top while the rest were frozen. I still have 2 Thai Hot's in the ground content as can be with a few light frost since the first. Not to mention I also dug up one of my Thai Hot's just before the first frost to bring indoors, picked it's pepper (green/red) where it now sits in my south window...the newest peppers I left on are just NOW turing red. I had to shower it and my eggplant for a case of spider mites yesterday but other than that all is well :) Vera

I have never anyone say they have gotten seed pods from a Divine. Does the Divine produce a seed pod?

Your Dean Conklin looks awesome, K! Mine has a small inflo so I don't know what to expect from it with the cool weather we're having.

You have quite a few seed pods! So far this year I have none. All this year I have gripped and complained about seed pods causing my plants to not bloom. So, the plumie gods have given me what I asked for. waaaah! lol

I can't tell from your pic, but did your Kona Candy branch? Mine did not with the first inflo, which is still blooming, and is now blooming on the second inflo... and branching 3 ways. Makes me very happy. KC was my fav plant of the year! :)

Your Desert Sunrise is a beauty! I lost mine almost from the start. It just never took off.

I think it slows next year's blooms down if you have too many seed pods. My 5 year old TMG had 8 pods and it didn't start blooming until July. I will not leave so many pods on it again.

My Devine is only 3 years old so I have not seen it seed as of yet. Maybe someone else who has had it longer could help.

Dean Conklin is a great plant. I don't know why its not more popular. It creates huge inflos and the flowers are about 4-5 inches across and fragrant.

Forgot to post about Kona Candy. It did the same as yours and failed to branch...but you got another bloom out of it. Great job on your part.

Wow, my practical joke keeps blooming, LOL! And your thrips have been very busy this year.

I had a nice pod forming on Heirloom that just fell off one day. Bah. I'm hoping my other two make it and then we can have a contest for seeds next summer :)

Nice to know that Kona Candy sometimes does a "Divine" and repeat-blooms. It would explain all the very close inflo scars on mine.

I see what you mean about Dean Conklin--it's beautiful!

I just found my first seed pod (ever) today! And it's on J-105. It's pretty big - I'm not sure how I missed it up until this point.

Roxanne. If you aren't interested. I would cut them. If mine wasn't the J -105. I would probably cut. I am growing some seeds, but I am interested in these to come. ( J -105. ). Who hoo. Wendy. Congratulations.
