Mosaic Virus?

A Bishops Cap pepper plant is growing well, but has very crinkled leaves - there is no discoloration, just a crinkled texture on every leaf.

It looks sort of like this, but with properly and uniform green leaves:

I will assume the worst and remove and destroy, but...

Can you show us a picture of your plant before you destroy it?

I will certainly post a pic - but need to take it first so give me a day or two.

It's been in a pot on my patio right next to 11 of my other potted peppers and not far from my garden with in ground peppers for a few months so far so keeping it for several more days is not giving that much extra relative contamination exposure risk.

(It's a Bishops Crown, not 'Cap', doh)

Yes, ROYAT sold ZD for many years. It isn't listed on the Foundation Plant Services list from UC Davis. FSC doesn't maintain a list of what varieties they cleaned nor to whom they were given. The only nurseries to have reported the provenance of their roses was Vintage in their Big Catalog, Trophy Roses from Arlington, Ill which supplied "virus free" exhibition roses for a few, brief years and Pickering with their statement that every rose they offered was tested and treated if necessary. I am unaware of any other nursery here, or in Canada, to make such claims. Heirloom reportedly worked with the U. of Washington and others to obtain treated plants, but the only "guaranty" their plants are RMV free is the boiler plate ravings set in place by John Clements thirty or so years ago when he proselytized roses from any and every source and sold them as soon as he could produce them. When they picked up roses from a Huntington Plant Sale in April and they appeared six months later in the October catalog as magically "virus free", even though he bought obviously virused plants, something was "irregular". That was the year they began offering Morey's Pink and Moonsprite, both of which I sold him at the Sale in April, and both of which were presented to him as definitely RMV infected. I suggested the roses and I told him which were infected. Whether he offered the Huntington Morey's Pink or Muriel Humenick's from Rose Acres is immaterial as Muriel's was the source of the own root Huntington plant and both were (are) obviously infected.

Some of my plants look exactly the same as yours and I also wondered whether they were sick. There is no need to worry….after recently giving my plants a fertilizer boost of fish emulsion and after about 5 weeks, new healthy, normal leaves are being produced again. I failed to give my plants an extra fertilizer dose all of last year…I was sick for a long time and also was not in the right frame of mind to go the extra mile with over 200 plants in my collection. Plant neglect resulted in new leaves on my plants being small, curled and mottled green. The valuable lesson I learned was that unless you have recently repotted your plants and given them a time-release fertilizer (like Osmocote), your plants will need an extra fetrtilizer dose in both the Spring and the Autumn. The Osmocote’s dosing in the soil only lasts for so long before your plants will be crying for their supplement. The condition of the plant’s leaves (yellowing & dropping or curling or color mottling) are always trying to impart a message to you…..a) feed me b) I got too cold or the number of hours in the day are decreasing; think summer is ending c) my roots are too wet and beginning to rot. No doubt there are other reasons but I haven’t experienced them yet.

@candace z6b VA There's no way to know for certain what you're buying. If you buy from a company that states they certify virus free plants, then odds are very good you'll get clean plants. If you buy $3.99 "body bag" specials at generic box stores, the odds are very very good that you'll receive either virused plants, mislabeled plants, and often both. Buying own root plants is no guarantee that you're receiving clean plants, its true. If cuttings are taken from a grafted, infected plant, all the resulting specimens will be virused, guaranteed. There are MANY roses in commerce that were infected with RMV the second they were introduced, and the odds of finding a clean specimen is close to zero (unless one of the virus cleanup labs has "cleaned" the plant and reintroduced it). "how do you go about acquiring nonvirused roses given industry practice and the practicality of finding a specific rose, assuming a nonvirused clone exists?" Well, that's the million dollar question, isn't it?! Its a huge challenge, definitely. It appears that Heirloom Roses in St. Paul, OR still guarantees virus free plants, so that would be a reasonable place to start. (though admittedly they charge extraordinary prices for their product, but its expensive to maintain an own root catalog of virus free specimens, so....) I guess it all comes down to cost: how much are YOU willing to pay to obtain a specific variety and get one guaranteed to be clean? Myself, I think its worth it to spend $50 for a certified virus free rose if its a cultivar I really want, and expect to spend years cultivating into a noteworthy specimen. I wouldn't bother investing my time and energy (which after 5-10 years is a MUCH bigger investment than the original purchase price) on a $5 bargain bagged rose that will almost certainly never reach its intended potential. But that's just me, and my decision-making.

Moat mosaic virus I have seen discolors the plants severely - like rot. There are browns, yellows etc. thats why they call it mosaiac. What you are describing sounds more like a nutrient/micronutrient deficiency or lockout. Show a pic.

That would be interesting (but not impossible) if it is a nutrient issue as I have 2 plants all purchased at same place (CCN) and planted at exact same time in same potting soil with exact same fertilizing (fish, seaweed + some epson). The other 11 are all growing vigorously (as it this one) but with smooth/normal leaves.

There is a chance it is not a Bishops Crown. I may have mis-remembered which one it was. Are there pepper varieties with crinkled leaves?

Like I said a picture will come.

I have the same symptoms on several of my plants, which are growing rapidly and flowering. Yikes! If this is a virus, is there any treatment? If it isn't, how to determine what nutritional deficiency is present?

Are you plants getting extreme heat (105-110F)? I have a theory this may cause the crinkling. The plants wilt severely in the heat every day leading to structural damage in the leaves.

While no other of my potted plants do this I have some in ground ones with bent and twisted leaf veins. I noted last year as the temps cooled down the new leaves stayed normal.

(I took photos yesterday evening, but haven't yet uploaded from camera to PC)

crinkled leaves says to me a pH problem or possible insect infestation. spider mites perhaps?

Crinkling or deformity of leaves will not be caused by heat, mosaiac disease. It is almost 100% caused by: transplanting into a "hot" or super fertilized mix, genetics, a ph problem which causes "lockout" of certain nutrients, and sometimes by an insect infestation. I would guess that it is nutrient or ph caused at this time. Toss some dolomitic pelletized lime on top of the containers and see if that helps. BTW, What color are the leaves? Any brittling around the edges? Are the veins lighter than the rest of the leaf? Lots of things come into play here. Most times, this straightens out. TiMo

The crinkling is equal on new and old leaves and uniform and no brittling. Color is uniform. No insects even under close inspection.
I've had nutrient issues before (here is it iron & zinc due to ph) Ca in soil and water is very high here. Correction is with acidifier & chelated Zn/Fe, or S for longer term- quick fix with folar spray. (none of anything I just mentioned has been done on potted plants)
I don't remember the name of the potting soil I used, but I didn't use fish emulsion and small bit of seaweed extract (bot cases diluted to ~30% of recommended) until 4wk after. No other fertilizer.
