just shoot me now....I am doing seeds again

Well, my smaller of the 2 seed pods opened and I decided to do it again since the parent tree is a really good one, I call her Marilyn's premium pink.

The photo shows how I chose to do it this time...24 hours between moist paper towels and that is covered in plastic and sat in a warm location. the seeds that are viable are the puffed up ones 24 hours later. roxanne

here they are after 24 hours and most are puffed up. I am going to put the ones the leaf is pointing to all together in the same hole on top of each other and see what happens as they were kind of broken and mess up...who knows...just for fun...roxanne

Believe me, those maples are nothing compared to birch. My next door neighbor's maple is blowing whirlybirds all over my back yard now. Don't know what kind of maple it is but it's more upright (taller and skinnier) than my sugar maple and it's whirlybirds are red. I mulch with about 3 inches of wood bark mulch in spring or early summer. By the next spring, it's gone, consumed. In fall I apply about 2 to 3 inches of shredded leaves (but with the leaves come more volunteer trees). Much (most) of that is blown away during winter. The leaves are shredded and I wet them as soon as I put them down, a little sprinkle of soil on top. Still, they blow away. My neighborhood sits on top of a BIG hill right on the Ohio River. (I can't tell you how many roof repairs/replacements we've had in 26 years.) Karen

thanks- these pics are mainly from the front yard. the large tree in the first pic is a Colorado blue spruce, surrounding by smaller green giants mostly. The second pic is a norway spruce in full bloom. The last pic is a fat albert spruce- again surrounded by green giants, and a norway spruce peeking in the pic on the right. I have a few bloodgood japanese maples too to pop in some red color. Hope this helps. I know I am not up on all the latin names and such and don't claim to know as much as alot of other people here- but I enjoy doing it. Much of this hobby is trial and error. So it pays to research stuff before you pay for anything. I've lost alot of stuff too.

Susan, Sorry to hear your lawn-mowing guy went nuts. I can't imagine what he was thinking. I agree that your perennials should come back, and I think that your sunflowers might as well. I have had sunflowers reseed into the lawn where I didn't want them, and I have had to mow them 3 or 4 times to kill them. Each time they came back less vigorously. So, if this is the first time they've been mowed down, they might come back. And, sometimes DH cuts down the liatris in June when he is mowing the pastures....after the cool-season wildflowers have set seed, and before the August bloomers like liatris, helenium and goldenrod have gotten very tall, and the liatris still blooms that same year. (Once again, though, if they are mowed 2 or 3 times, that's it for them.) Terrydenise, Your story about your grandfather reminds me of one of my old farmer neighbors. I grow lots of herbs and flowers in my veggie garden and he always asks me "Why you growing those weeds in there?" He also thinks anything that is not a veggie or fruit is not worth messing with. I wonder if they make any of those "Wildflower Area: No Mowing" type signs (like ODOT has along some highways) that someone could put in their yard to indicate that mowing a specific area is a no-no? Susan, which stage of grief have you made it to so far? I'm assuming you've made it past denial and at least to anger. Bargaining? Depression? Acceptance? Let us know and we'll talk you through it. Chin up, Flyleft. You've come so far, and been so strong, and persevered through so much, and been so brave that this little problem will prove to be nothing in the long run. I haven't been posting, but if it makes you feel any better, I lost an brand new, uninsured Toto Neorest when my workers dropped the box it came in, and some Loewen windows came yesterday, a month late, and two of the three were defective. The tile guy disappeared for a month because he did not have a big enough saw for our tiles and was waiting for it to go on sale. We've had to redo so many things that it's become a standing joke. The beautiful floor for our bedroom never came because they actually had no stock, and no way of getting it, only a beautiful sample. The surprise structural issues only took 5 months to resolve. And so on. Oh yes, and I'm now on high blood pressure medication for the first time. And I tore a ligament in my right knee in an accident like the one that killed the billionaire contractor in Wisconsin last week. But that's the way it goes. Still, there is so much to be grateful for, and a beautiful bathroom will give you years of pleasure. I know as soon as I step into my, now installed, but still covered new tub and see one of the Elgin Marbles placed on the wall of my new study, the pain will be forgotten. The truly unlucky one is the construction worker I'm sure you read about who fell 30 stories the other day just down the block. And of course, many years ago my brother as a construction lawyer was involved with Willow Island, the most deadly construction accident in US history. Not to be morbid, but meditative instead, our little woes connect us with those who built this great city. Just near here is the Holland Tunnel, whose brilliant young designer, Clifford Holland, died of exhaustion two days before breaking through to NJ, leaving behind four young daughters. Nearby is also the former headquarters of the Roebling company that built the Brooklyn Bridge. During its construction, Washington Roebling was paralyzed by the bends. Near that is the street named for John Ericsson, one of the most influential mechanical engineers of all time, who designed the USS Monitor in the Civil war. He had been permanently embittered when a poorly designed gun, foolishly added by his chiseling partner, blew up on another brilliant ship design of his and killed 8 people, including the Secretary of War and the Secretary of the Navy. So we are part, you and I, in our little ways, of the glorious and tragic tradition of those who cared to make material things more perfect --as a way of making the human spirit a little more perfect. AND....this is why we do seeds...the thrill of what you can get. This is the second year for this seedling blooming from the previous parent/flower. The scent is vanilla and the back is pretty too shown in the background. When it bloomed for the first time last year, it did not look this interesting...so, let's see what next year brings.

Cannot wait for the Wailea one as it is a real keeper of a happy blooming tree and outstanding scent and petal quality. Alohas and Mahalo, roxanne

Very nice!

I, too, planted some of my seeds from my two recent seedpods even though I really don't need any more new plants to care for. It's like a disease! LOL

Honestly, I wasn't sure about the seeds from the second one because none of the seeds grew last year. I'm starting to wonder if that was really the case though because they took a really long time this year and I almost gave up on them. Good thing I didn't.

I read on here about some people who get their's to bloom so fast....my 1st '05 seedling did not bloom till 2010! roxanne

wow Roxanne!! super exciting!! I received 30 mixed seeds from ebay! I was very excited, but now not so!! only 3 out of 18 that i put in paper towels have puffed and did germinate for me, the rest sadly did not make it and I lost due to mold. Frustrating. Live and learn. you must be in heaven and I'd do the same if I were you.. lol.

Roxanne, are you going to start seeds this winter? I still have some seeds and I don't know if I should start them next spring or I could do it during winter with heating mat and lights and everything.... in my dining room. :)

Wow Rox,

Very impressive! You have the whole system down pat. I have a few seed pods earlier in the season but they all rotted! So I never even had a chance to experiment.

Sago...this is the same as when I did it in '05...I carry them around like babies and they end up in the sun room when it is really cold....

Do you happen to remember what the flower looked like during the first bloom? I've read that they can change during the first three flowerings, but I am curious about how much they can change.

Yes, this red last year in it's first year, did not have the scent yet or the stripy thing down the petal...anxious for next year.
