aji limon about to go to the dumpster

I've seen some pretty sad looking plants, but never this bad. this plant has failed in the most depressing way possible. and I was excited about this one too. I've only ever had one aji limon pod in my life, and indeed it was delicious. but I guess it'll be a while before I ever get one again, because it looks like I gotta start a new plant from seed.

what I'm seeing happen here is very depressing. the plant sets pods, they begin to mature, then they rot. never ripening in between.

this plant is about to go to the dumpster. it wouldn't be the first, or even the 10th time I've thrown a plant away, so no tears will be shed. my yard is far too small to be wasting space on failed plants. but the my inner scientist is quite curious though. what caused this worst case scenario pepper failure?

Maybe root rot, throw soil out too. You could take a leaf or two in a plastic bag to a good independent nursery and pay for a diagnosis. Or take more pictures, close up and send to your local extension service.

Yeah, I can't tell the plant of interest from the background. Put something light behind it.

Aji Lemon/Limon and Lemon Drop are Baccatum. Limon is Chinense. BUT some seed vendors interchange the names for whatever they think will sell more seeds.

I looked over stuff today, and to my pleasant surprise, things are looking both worse, and better, but totaling "better" :) There's still foliage drop and yellow plants, but I also noticed the first growth sprint since I planted out. Many plants have taken up a lot, and I saw lots of small pods - one of my thai plants currently has more than 20 pods on it, even if it's a small plant. Current theory: "sunburn, transplant shock (exacerbated by the condition some were in when transplanted)" as pinned by Josh. This theory has been strengthened by the fact that some of the most severely root bound plants are still the ones doing the worse, while plants that were not root bound are doing pretty great. I sprinkled blood meal on all plants today and watered in, just in case nitrogen deficiency is actually a problem. I also learned that in Norway, we use almost all fish byproducts in feed for farmed fish, and to some extent chicken... One thing's for sure, I keep learning. Thanks so much for your input. I'll leave you with a photo of the new detachable green house my father and I built today.

Baccatums I grew this year were Lemon Drop, Aji Amarillo, Birgit's Locoto, Aji Santa Cruz, Bulgarian Teardrop, Brazilian Starfish and Aji Habanero. BRAZILIAN STARFISH I'll probably photograph today, and then taste it for the first time. Real real late the pods started ripening a lot at once. LEMON DROP and BIRGIT'S LOCOTO are my favorites for looks and flavor. Birgit's is the most productive variety I've seen. In fact, I'm no longer gonna' grow Serranos as my workhorse (eat 'em unripe) pepper, because the unripe Birgit's tastes better and is much more plentiful. And when they ripen, they taste just as great as Lemon Drops, or better. AJI HABANERO has a really beautiful pod, slightly larger and oranger than Lemon Drop. There's practically zero heat, repeat: practically zero heat. I'll grow it again next year because I'd miss not having it around. BULGARIAN TEARDROP was the very first pepper plant to start looking nice in my garden. The pods developed a nice pumpkin shape early, and were an off-white color for a long time before turning orange. When I gave little bags of peppers to friends, the Bulgarian Teardrops were the most elegant in the bunch. AJI AMARILLO I grew a different strain from last year, and the new ones have humongous pods that still haven't ripened. AJI SANTA CRUZ I grew at a location far from my house, where I never managed to commute to often enough. None of the peppers I grew there came out well, but I did harvest some Aji Santa Cruz's and one thing I'll say is the pods do grow big, with grooves like an Asian cucumber. Several people traded or gave me seeds for most of these, and I thank them and hope they read this.

OK t, I went to the garden last night and did a 'tasting ', Limon first, then Hot Lemon. Lemon was hotter AND tastier, last night :-). Made meat loaf today, went to the garden (in the rain) for some Nardellos to go in the meat loaf and grabbed some Limons, Hot Lemons, and Omnicolors along with the Nardellos did another 'tasting' WITH the meatloaf, first a Hot Lemon, then a Limon, then 2 more Hot Lemons. I must admit I preferred the Hot Lemons over the Limons last night and today. The Hot Lemons are described as 'citrusy' tasting, and I have to agree with that description, they are indeed citrusy, along with heat on a scale of 8 (at least last night and today :-)). Limons are not 'citrusy' when compared side by side to a Hot Lemon, IMO. In fact, last night and today they were kinda bland compared to the Hot Lemon. Fickle, ain't I? I only had a couple red Omnicolors (like I said they get eaten), there's a kazillion out there stuck in this purple striped stage and I'm doubting they're gonna have a chance to ripen before a predicted freeze next week. In this stage they taste exactly like an Aji Crystal in it's cream colored stage; when they're red they have a fruity raspberry like flavor, and good heat to boot. I REALLY like Omnicolor. But I waffle and am fickle too.

I would try new soil, pot, and cut down plant stems.
You willnot get pods this year but plant might be saved.

I've only seen pods like that from when they go from ripe to over ripe and shrivel and eventually get abandoned by the plant as a normal life cycle if it was in the wild to drop and seed new plants.

If it went from green to that mess, I am at a loss for what it could be, if it were soil then all your plants should exibit the same, it could be a disease possibly passed onto it by a sucking insect like aphids and the likes.

Sorry for your loss, if you find out the cause please share.

here's a more isolated picture. it's in a pot, so I can move it around. I never save soil from plants with issues. heck, the whole pot is going in the trash, I have plenty of small plastic pots.

frankly I think I just need to get new seeds. of 10 attempts (2 at a time 5 different times) this is the only one from the batch I could get to last past seedling stage (7 never sprouted, 2 died young). I don't see any point in trying to save the plant for next year, it was probably just weak stock. I can just try again next year.

and miguelovic, I suppose I'll accept that edit. though I have plenty of plants that have gotten the exact same treatment, all doing much better than this. but hey, I'll accept blame. it's my plant, it damn sure wasn't anyone else's fault.

lots of weird stuff going on this year in my garden. I guess that's what keeps things interesting. what gets me is it's all the mild-medium peppers going bad. the supers are all doing just fine.

If it is some kind of mildew, as I think, the there might be other infected plants around.

That looks awful! I guess pitching it is the right thing to do. definitely something wrong systemically.
