Okay, this Incredible Edibles swap was scheduled for March, but I just can't wait any longer to get started. Plus, the earlier start date will mean most people will get their seeds back in time to use them for this growing season.

Well, tomorrow's the last day to mail packages for the swap.

Great turnout this year, over 30 participants! Hard to believe that even though this was my third year to host, there were still quite a few peppers sent in that I had never even heard of.

Hosting this swap is fun, but it is not helping me keep my growlist to a reasonable size ...

Yes! I was gonna put that in last nite and forgot it till after I had submitted it! Was falling down tired and heading up to bed or I would have done a second post! If you just want to see if they're germinating you can usually hold the baggie up to strong lite and tell well enough if they're growing, but if you plan to plant them in soil when they germinate I recommend you wait a little less than peppers usually take to germinate and then unfold the paper towel to actually look. To move them into soil it's easiest if you do it immediately when you see germination or else the root can start to grow into the paper, making it hard to pick up! Obviously do it carefully when you move them--you're good with Plant Things, shouldn't be a problem for you! I have a tweezers with a long, very pointed end I can move them with (a craft tweezers), but (if they're not imbedded in the paper) you can often just "get" them with the tip of a toothpick or unbent paper clip or something. Usually easier to use something besides just trying to pick them up with your fingers! And if you make a very slight indentation in the soil you can just sort of lay them in (sideways works!) and push a BIT of soil over them. Virtually all of them should make it! A couple times I've "planted" seeds in paper towels that I knew were hard and took a long time to germinate so I could easily see when they germinated and not have to try to keep pots of soil "the right wetness" for a long time--without ever knowing if I should "wait longer" or not! When I had enough that germinated and I had them successfully planted in soil, I just threw the rest out! Worked well! With that many seeds it sounds like you should easily find as many good ones as you want. But one thing I do! When I'm putting them on the paper towel I make sure the seeds aren't touching each other. Don't know if that's necessary or not, but I do it because of the "rotten apple in a barrel" effect! Hi Becky! I'm glad you had a nice vacation! You already had the Habanero, Gold Bullet and Lemon Drop in your package, but I added the California Wonder. I was under the impression that you didn't want any bells ... No packages went out today, had things that had to be done, like grocery shopping, helping kids with homework, etc. Still waiting on that seed order, but I'll try to get all of the other packages ready over the weekend, and in the mail on Monday. I'm really surprised how fast the packages have reached their destinations, and I am so glad that everyone seems happy with their selections. I tried my best to find things that matched everyone's preferences and wishlist items, but it is challenging since I don't have any control over what is sent in. Hope everyone has a great weekend. We have another freeze warning the next two nights with more chances for snow. Hard to believe tomorrow is the first of May with the weather we've been having this week! Bonnie

Thanks, Jay, for sharing that! We'll have to compare notes on how long our Big Jim's are later this season, LOL! I'm also growing Joe's Long (aka Whippet's Tail) which is also supposed to get pretty long. Who know's maybe I'll grow a record breaker this year, haha!

Has anyone grown 'Carlo Putini'? There is very little info on the web, but my order from Sandhill came through big time, and I have 50-odd seedlings up.

I have about 4x seedlings than room, so I need to be ruthless here. Its supposed to be a 'cayenne-like' hot pepper, but I already have 50-odd Hungarian Carrot peppers, which are pretty darn hot as well. And then I have a whole bunch of jalapenos. I don't need 200 plants to make salsa and hot sauce, so I need to whittle this down ........

Jay, I see that your guy sells Guajillo seed. I can't grow them here, but that is one great pepper when it comes to making pinto beans.

Started shipping packages back out today. Yippee!!! My family would like me to catch up on the laundry, LOL!

David, I haven't grown Carlo Putini, but I'm trying Guajillo this year. Does it just need a longer season? If you were a little closer, I'd come take all those extra seedlings off your hands, 'cause it's obvious I'm not going to have enough this year : )

Bonnie, when it comes to Gjajillo, I just eat 'em :-). I think they need a warmer clime/ longer season than I have.

I get them dried - all the heat is in the seeds, and it isn't that much. Adding one or two to a pot of stew adds a great flavor - remove when ready to serve. For beans, I roughly crush a few dried peppers, fry them a bit in oil until they start to smell good, then add soaked pinto beans, water, salt, and simmer away.

Today I started transplanting my seedlings. I did 5 trays of 18, and then planted some tiny seedlings directly into large containers as an experiment. Still a long ways to go.
