Pepperomia rooted in water,growing new leaf in water upside down?

I rooted a Pepperomia cutting that broke off in a jar of water. It took about two months to sprout roots but now it has many and I wanted to put it in soil. When I took a look at it the other day I noticed that it has a green part growing on the opposite side of the origional leaf. I looked closer and it is in the shape of a small leaf. So basically it is growing a new leaf upside down from the origional stem into the water. So my question is...How do I pot this in soil? Will the new leaf turn and grow upright? I hope whoever reads this understands what Im talkinga bout because I havent seen this one before. Thanks.

Yesterday one of my planters was dug up and plants here and there. I tucked them back in muttering unflattering comments about squirrels and watered well thinking that might deter the critters. Awoke this morning to a big pile of soil and plants on the ground. Decided that I would tuck the plants back in and put out the plastic knives. Surprise, there was a mallard duck nest with a bluish egg in the planter! Sorry, squirrels. Disturbed plants got put in another container and duck nest will stay. Thought the mallards were nesting away from our yard this year. This is very late but they are welcome.

To paraphrase what my friend Joe Real said in another forum: "The rolling of the leaves makes it absorb less sunlight and increased roughness coefficient for better sensible heat transfer to help cool off the plant. In a way, drooping behaves the same way also, when the leaves droop, its angle become more vertical and thus become more oblique when absorbing sunlight, thus reducing radiation load, also the roughness coefficient increases, and this facilitates heat transfer from leaves to air. It is quite common with most plants. It is called midday water stress. We used to measure leaf water potential various times of the day. When the root system cannot keep up with evaporative demand, the plant's leaves droop or wilt as a safety reaction. Sometimes, it is leaf rolling."

Why is my monadenium growing upside-down?

I have a very similar plant that lost its growth point, and the stem has turned to wood. It has one branch emerging in the middle at a right angle. It is growing very long, and I have to support the branch by leaning it over nearby pots. I think yours is Monadenium heteropodum. My first reaction is to not getting greedy or complicated, but just take the entire rooted section along with the normal oriented section. That's a win! You can always layer some more, or try rooting a few stem sections in a humidity chamber. I read that this years hardened growth taken in early fall is a good time to take cuttings from that plant. However, I also read here that tip layering works with that also. That supports brandon's comment about a new shoot coming up from base of the backwards section (like raspberries do). So it may be worth dividing the rooted section (if it is long enough), leaving the base part in the ground to hopefully send up a a shoot later. Good luck and let us know how it works, Ron

I am not familiar with the plant but like to propagate. If it were mine, I would pin it down on wet potting soil, cover it with a little Turface and slip it into a bag. It looks like the original leaf is in the way of potting it and that roots and leaves are coming out of a node, which is normal. I propagate vines, verbena and diamond frost euphorbia that way, pinning down. The Turface also weights it down and stays moist and the cutting roots seeks the soil on their own. I start lightly fertilizing with tomato fertilizer as soon as I get roots. But I don't root things in water so don't know about the transition to soil. It's easy to smother plants in soil. You probably don't have Turface, people use crushed granite. You have a robust looking affair there. I am responding because you said anyone. Maybe someone will save you from my advice and post a better idea. Good luck! pw

Thanks for the response Peggiewho. After this weekend I'll give it a try what you suggested. I'm debating whether I should cut off the origional leaf and turn the new leaves upright then pin it down?

Yes, have thought about that solution also. You have a totally new little plant there. It has been deriving it's nourishment from the original leaf. The question is can it switch to the new roots for nourishment in time. I guess we don't learn these things without taking risks. I would count your new plant as an accomplishment one way or another. pw
